I had a cool Idea why don't we put on an artshow!

Hello all:
 
I had an idea Brainstorming in #f-mktg. We were trying to come up with
ways to extend our reach. Getting Free Software/Linux people is awesome
but who else might be interested in Fedora? so I thought why don't we
put on a Fedora Project artshow?!?
 

Here is what I was invisioning...
 
 * we somehow procure a gallery
 * Fedorians bring in some art they had done
 * we invite people from the art world to see it
 * try to get written up in art mags (do they exist, if so which ones)
 * thought this would be an awesome way to show that art and
freesoftware are great partners
 * thought this would be a way that people could parade out that one
desgin they had for $fedoraVersionInThePast that just didnt make it
 * would be a way to see the creative side of people we didnt know had
one (how many coders/marketing people/legal etc are also painters,
sculpters, etc)
 
If anyone likes this idea let me know and maybe we can make this
happen :)

At Nicaragua, Free Software has team up with Free Culture as we have a
lot of commons interests. As Free Software community we have organized
Free Music concerts.

To me your idea makes sense. What I see as something to work out is a
geographical location to gather all fedora art. What about a virtual
gallery as a starting point?

the Geo issue... My brain is US specific :/ 

Maybe each interested Region could do one...

The virtual gallery is a cool idea but I think it wouldn't attract the
groups that we were wanting to attract...

any thoughts?

 Hi,

 Though I'm new to the list, I would consider the following:

 # Communication is important when addressing to international
communities or minorities. This is something that needs to be very well
thinken off.

 # I've seen a survey link (not active though) on the fedora marketing
resources page. I would prioritize this, as information is power, and
having such tool would eventually help us. If we have a 10 million user
spec, we only need 1064 valid questionnaires to grant a 5% error.
Segmenting our targets would allow us to develop more attractive
communication.

 # I would recon that if your objective is massification of Fedora
GNU/Linux, we aim exactly to the points where it does matter to end
users:
 - Ease of use
 - Productivity (Educational/Corporate targets)
 - Support
 - Eye Candy / Technology

 There is no base on this suggestions (such as surveys or studies), but
I would eventually characterize those as some of the most important
things that newcomers and migrating users would value.

Those are all good points but how does that work into getting
contributors to other areas of the Fedora Project? 

The plan with this art show was to show the art community that there was
room for them in the project.  And then we can spread the
knowledge/usage of Free Software tools and Free Culture Licensing to a
group of people that arent really interested in programming or software
in general.

We (Design Team) persuaded Infrastructure to give us a test instance of 
some galley software and got Gallery2. It was cumbersome and not 
integrated with the rest of the Fedora web presence, so it was very 
little used and not advertised at all (it was a step-up from our 
previous try to use the wiki for the same task). I believe the test 
instance was removed in the mean time.

In the testing space there is also a gallery envisioned mostly for 
Ambassadors use: http://publictest16.fedoraproject.org/plogger/ again, 
with an unfriendly interface and very little use.

It should be also mentioned the Albums section of fedoraforum.org: 
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/album.php which is, no offense - posted my 
own share of crap there, a bit of a mess.

There are also Fedora groups on sites like deviantART and flickr, but 
those are not to be used for our core functionality, being closed 
platforms (so out of the 4 foundations).

We first have to gather the creation and grow confident they are good 
enough.

I was thinking about this also as a way to give users stuff they may 
like to use - wallpapers and such.

Many people do not realize this: is not *that* hard to create art, you 
just have to have a story to tell, the rest is only tools and we have 
the tools.

Hi again,

 I am not the right person to speak in the name of artists, but we
should understand their needs and use them. But the answer is within
Fedora artists.
 
 I do understand that creating a community or expanding one is a time
and effort consuming activity.
 I would point to have people checking what the artists might be
interested, and from there we should work on something to offer them. I
don't believe that a gallery will be enough for the long run.
 I would point to following:

 Place > Provide a ground where people can share and interact with
artists. Not only a gallery, but tutorials also through video and other
appealing formats. We have great tools bundled with Fedora for
micro-blogging? Bring life to our community using micro-blogging.
 
 Promotion > Promote Fedora and Artists through adding their work to our
release. Remember that Fedora is a great distribution channel and one of
the top GNU/Linux distributions. This should be appealing for new
artists. Manage campaigns aimed to schools of art so they can
participate aswell. This has to be done at the highest level. 

 I understand this is no easy task, as I've runned across with the same
on GNOME. There is a huge shortage of artists willing to participate.

 Well, the first thing would be contacting our Artists and check what we
can do to improve their community and how we can promote them. Maybe
then elaborate a strategy for a campaign.

 The depot/gallery is a good idea, but needs more substance. I shouldn't
use my current GNOME work as example, but in what I'm presenting to
GNOME related to the wildlife, I've contacted several institutions like
SOS Lynx (Save the Iberian Lynx), and they have been receptive to
provide high definition images, videos, etc. This are unique resources
for artists. I would consider since Fedora is also related to
Technology, that a contact could be established with media donators,
like NASA (they have lots of fun photos released under GPL) and other
institutions that can donate media.
 If we get an extense database of unique images, a set of management
tools to handle the community and some ways to promote it, this could be
indeed a great start to get more people.

 I need to take a deeper look into this. Meanwhile if someone can start
working on possible software we might use and on the availability of
people to develop a online plataform that meets the needs of our
currents artists, I believe we soon can start working on a communication
campaign for new artists.

To keep a community alive, I would recon we will need more than this. I
would add the possibility of having micro-blogging functionanility
attached to this gallery. Interaction will be a key feature in keeping
the community alive and recruiting new people, besides keeping a high
interest degree from those already involved.

I do agree, but tools aren't just enough. There should also be present a
strong human bound and at some point an environment of cumplicity
amongst our users.

Being a student myself, I've been developing works for school that aim
real life situations. I would eventually point to a campaign that aims
to target art students through schools. 
About deviantart, they provide sales services (and I do "gear up" my
desktop on DeviantART). We shouldn't probably take such approach, but
the functionality (non-commercial) should be something that we can take
as a good example.
If you look at http://art.gnome.org, it's been dead for quite some time,
and it's way smaller than Deviant Art. So there's a good example that
just a small gallery isn't enough. We need more... As an artist, what
would you consider important to have to build a community and keep them
interested everyday ?

We in Fedora use identi.ca for micro-blogging, but this way is not very 
effective: being spread all around the world is not easy easy to have 
communication in real-time.
When we need real-time communication, we prefer IRC, having 2 channels: 
#fedora-art about creating art *with* Fedora and #fedora-design for 
creating art *for* Fedora.

The most important part in my experience is getting *good* feedback from

I never used the commercial part of deviantART, but I acknowledge its 
interface and community.

I submitted a few works to art.gnome.org and didn't like it: the proces 
was not direct, everything was going trough a human who processed and 
posted the submissions. The community was small, and you had little 
feedback and small exposure.

what I ment was we should have a real art show... in IRL.  I was being
very NA minded but I dont see why there couldnt be one in NA and/or else
where.

Whoever got the resources sorted out first could just do it. That way it
can also be a localized event. 

If people from other areas wanted to contribute they could either fly or
ship the work to the location where the event was being held.

I think doing this in IRL gives "regular people" to the chance to walk
into a building and without even knowing it be exposed to freesoftware
and the culture that loves it.

There is Libre Graphics Meeting, which will happen this year at the end 
of May in Brussels - I have a few plans about that and hope some 
European contributors will be able to participate.

Beyond being a community, Fedora is software so the works are mostly 
digital... there is little need for shipping. However, flying people in 
North America... this is difficult.

*expensive*.

budget and photographers.

The art wouldn't and should all be Fedora related, I wanted to show off
that were crative artistic people, people could show paintings,

lesser know galleries shouldn't be as expensive and may do it for the
publicity.  Also there could be people inside the project that run a
gallery or know someone who does... I'm not above begging :)

Failing once shouldn't kill new ideas. If we want our
community/contributors/userbase/etc to grow we need to think outside of
the box and work on building up ideas insead of tearing them down.  

We will never grow as a Project or as people if we just keep doing the
samething.

all about reaching for the stars.  But is that what we are really doing?

Yes, I'm a noob so I don't have past failures looming over me, but
neither should anyone else, try something. Go for it.  The advise given
to all Open Source projects is the release early and relase often,  why
don't we fail early and fail often.  Bad ideas are only bad once they
don't work.
