Hi,

I just posted a 15 minute 'fun things in Fedora' video. It's on YouTube
- I tried blip.tv and the upload kept stalling, so I split the video in
to and got it up on YouTube just so I could make it available more
quickly.

because I think everybody approaches Fedora a bit differently and
discovers different things so we can learn a lot from each other.

By the way, if anybody would like to submit translations, I can upload
them. YouTube seems to have a really cool captioning system and it seems
to auto-detect where each line should go in the video.

0. It was great to see the one-page release notes get localized, and 
I've heard some requests to try to get the Marketing stuff more i18n'd
1. I'm trying to learn Spanish (and Chinese, for that matter, though 
it's harder for me to translate things into Chinese).
2. I figure this is as good a way as any to learn how to work with our 
translation workflow.

So, with a lot of help from Google Translate, I took 15 minutes and 
have...

going on a feedback/bug-reporting spree for both + similar projects.

When I started as Ambassador, I was told to subscribe to this list. I
have not join the marketing team yet, I intend to do so in January.
But I have some time tonight, and I can use to correct the Spanish
google translation. There are useful for another people understand
what you are saying, but there are not good enough for  distribution.
If no one volunteer before, I can undertake this in about 5 hours.

Unfortunately, one of the five fun things is not watching the five fun
things videos in a stock fedora install.

The site requires flash.

Supporting open video technology isn't especially hard, and it doesn't
require losing compatibility with people still on proprietary platforms.

I hope you didn't mean to hurt my feelings with your message because it
could certainly be interpreted that way.

As noted, the videos were created in Fedora 12 using PiTiVi. I attempted
to encode them 3 times, for a total of 3 hours rendering time (I let the
last one render overnight last night since I had wasted hours already)
using an Ogg container, Theora video codecs, and Vorbis & Celt sound
codecs. Every single time, the video rendered completely out-of-sync.
Even though gstreamer was used to render it, it refused to play in
gstreamer players, only playing in mplayer.

I finally had to render it using an avi container / mpeg2 / mp3, and
that only took 15 minutes to render.

I attempted to upload it to blip.tv at first, as I already noted, and
after 2 failed attempts (a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes of my time) I
gave up and had it uploaded to YouTube in 30 minutes. Whenever I have to
upload something to YouTube, I always make an ogv version available (you
can see in my past blog posts where I've done this) but in this case it
simply was not possible as it would not encode successfully.

You can ask anyone who knows me - I am insanely religious about software
freedom and codec freedom. After spending hours filming, editing,
rendering, and uploading these video (I would guesstimate about 12 hours
total, during my holiday vacation time) I became impatient and just
wanted to share the video instead of putting myself through continued
pain trying to do it the right way.

Can you help me get this working with ogg & blip.tv? Is there a bug in
PiTiVi or F12's theora / ogg / celt / vorbis encoders that resulted in
my having such a poor experience? What do you suggest? I used all of the
default settings in PiTiVi as I wasn't sure what encoder settings to
tweak (and at ~1 hour rendering time per attempt making wild guesses
would not be a prudent usage of my time.)

Understood. But it's poor sales for fedora when you use an approach
which works less well for Fedora than it does for windows.

!  No, I didn't.  We all have important things to do with our time, there
is no crime in not taking some step, even an easy one, when we think
doing so will conserve some resources.

I had no idea what your intentions were, only that the result required
flash. I assumed that you simply were unaware of the issue and was
trying to offer to help out, rather than just complaining that it
ought to be done some other way.

The point of saying that its easy is that I simply wanted to make the point
that I'm not suggesting you undertake a super-human effort. Obviously
I failed to account for the difficulties that you already had!

CELT? Celt is completely inapplicable for this use case. PiTiVi
shouldn't be offering it.

This bug sounds vaguely like what you experienced:

One possible work around would be to render to high quality MJPEG in AVI
(which is effectively lossless) plus PCM audio then use a tool like ffmpeg
to Theora to transcode.

There must be a bug, because the encoders alone are no less speedy than
what you ended up using, at least not in any material way.

I've never used pitivi before, but I'll install it and attempt to reproduce
your issue.  Could you possibly make your project file available to me if
I'm unable to reproduce this with a trivial test case?

I wish I knew. I've been around Fedora forever, and *I* felt
discouraged. I can't imagine how a new contributor would feel, after
pulling together the required initiative and hours of their free time to
put something together and to get a reply like that....

I don't use Windows. I use Fedora 12. I created the video and I can play
the video fine. While I understand your point, it's not fair. Would it
have been better for me to not produce the video at all? Because that's
how I'm feeling now.

And I understand that completely. I was trying every free option
available in an attempt to produce a video with clean codecs.

Thanks for the bug link.

I did the former. I didn't have the time to do the latter. I was hoping
to get the upload to blip.tv working as blip.tv can do the transcoding
server-side.

If you'd like to transcode it for me, that would be really helpful.

The project is 64 GB.... I can't think of any reasonable way to share
that. But a trivial test case should be able to reproduce the issue.

I ask myself how long did it take overall to make it writting the
transcript, recording the footage, pulling all together, etc.

Because I had the idea "how about that some fedora people show the
community how they work, what does their Desktop look like, what
programms they use" in EXACTLY the way I saw in your video ;-)

It took around 12 hours, but it could have taken 6 or less if I didn't 
end up having so many problems encoding it and uploading it. Everything 
through editing the clips together and adding titles was very 
straightforward. But it was extremely painful and time-consuming to 
render them, and very difficult to upload them. (Even YouTube failed the 
first 3 tries. The first try because the video was over 10 minutes, so I 
had to split it and re-render it, then upload again.)

If we want to make a drive for this I think we need to get the bugs in 
the encoders fixed, and we should also decide on a proper place to host 
the videos (I will say YouTube's caption feature is great - I didn't 
have to set up time stamps at all and it's very close to being in-sync) 
and have some documentation for getting the uploaded and working with 
some troubleshooting information.

E.g. a nice step-by-step guide....

The last time I checked (read: Last night), VLC could play youtube links when 
passed the http://youtube.com/watch url from the command line, and that gnash 
played them in browser, both with the free-but-patent-encumbered codecs in 
rpmfusion-free. 

So, no, you don't need proprietary software to view youtube. I use VLC with 
youtube links daily.

I too have had some bad experiences with blip.tv's upload service trying to 
get ABLEconf videos online. Blip.tv may be more Freedom oriented, but when it 
comes down to it, youtube+an ogv direct download accomplishes the same thing 
with much less effort :(

Awesome videos, Máirín. Almost enough to inspire me to put my own ugly mug 
onscreen ;-)

One of the oldest tech support wants was to have a dvd/cdrom of videos
explaining to people how to do various things. Having a set of movies
of how to:

Know if Fedora is right for you
How to run/install Fedora on your
 a) USB
 b) Single boot system
 c) Dual boot system
How to log in, and what you can do.
How to add/remove packages
How to debug a problem
How to make a video you can upload to XYZ.
What is cool about this release.
What is known problems about this release.

Unfortunately, good A/V production tools are not a strong point in
FOSS, although there are several notable projects in progress to try
and correct them.

I'm concerned about the encoding stuff in particular, though -- I hate
to ask, Mo, but did you get a chance to file a bug about the encoding
problems you faced?  If not, maybe someone here who's got a keen
interest in moving the free-software-top-to-bottom stack forward would
ilke to reproduce from your description earlier in the thread, and
then handle the filing of the bug(s) and follow-up.  That seems like a
very constructive way forward.

A problem is, in F12 we seems to have some regressions making the things 
worse, for example I am unable to record any usable screencast due to

And PiTiVi, which is out best option as a video editor, is in such a 
sore state, despite being under development for years... Maybe is the 
time for us as a community to do something about that.

Just an interlude: I am not sure about PiTiVi, but usually when you 
split a video (mencoder, avidemux, whatever...) you don't need to 
re-render it, saving a segment with the same encodings should be *very 
fast*.

Maybe we can get them hosted somehow on our servers, we don't need 
streaming or Flash, people with HTML5-enabled browsers should be able to 
see them.

Note: I agree is important to put the videos where the viewers are, so 
upload copies on YouTube, Vimeo, Blip.tv, etc. but would like to have 
also the "original" somewhere is a Free format.

Pitivi's bug of desynched audio/video has a while being around reported
before this.

No solution yet.

On top of that, OpenShot suffers from similar problems -.-. (yah yah, bugs
filed up and reported trough the appropiate channels long ago)

I'm going through what you wrote, the rough idea is there, but needs a 
bit of polish... I'm currently working on it and will post it somewhere 
once I've got it... I've been meaning to do some Spanish translation 
work for Fedora for years now, but being a physician, and now going 
through my residency is a bit difficult to find time to work on anything 
else.
