Hello everyone,
I just finished a draft of an Article about the discussion concerning the potential replacement of Shotwell in future versions of Fedora.
You will need to log in with your FAS account[1] before you can view the article.
https://fedoramagazine.org/?p=11005&preview_id=11005&preview=true
I think I have covered the major points in the thread and the two potential replacements that have been mentioned. I was not sure about referencing a similar previous look at image viewers that was in Fedora Magazine in 2014.
https://fedoramagazine.org/17-alternatives-to-your-default-image-viewer -on-fedora/
This is potentially my first article for Fedora Magazine so I welcome all feedback.

Thanks,

I read this draft but I wasn't sure how this figured into our publishing strategy for the coming weeks. Personally I think a story that says "we don't know yet what the next photo app will be, or if there'll be one" isn't very interesting for the audience. I don't think it's helpful to direct thousands of readers to a conversation where they don't have a lot of context.
It's more useful to me to have a newer look at image viewers than the previous article. People already know they have choices, maybe a good revision would be to show them updates there?

I have to agree with Paul. Perhaps it would be good to angle it as “With Shotwell being forked, it’s future in Fedora may be limited... These {X number of} replacement options are vying for top spot...”
It would be great to include Darktable in with the options as well as it’s one of the most capable tools available to manage photos.

Thanks for the feedback. I was looking at it from a different angle when writing it - more of a call to action for contributors to give feedback. Let me look at the other angle and see how I can change the point of view and add a few more options that have not been mentioned in that mailing list discussion.

The "call to action" angle might be something for communityblog.fedoraproject.org?
=========================================== = Quick Summary = =========================================== 1) Why not both Magazine + CommBlog? 2) Magazine: Looking at other software 3) CommBlog: Contributors to give feedback ===========================================

I think maybe this could be a double post of sorts for the Magazine and the CommBlog?
For the Magazine, the article could have a focus on making users aware of other software that is available as an alternative to Shotwell, without necessarily saying the end is nigh for Shotwell. This way, users can be informed about possible alternatives and they might actually find something they like better anyways. This way, whenever Shotwell is faded out, we can easily refer back to this article in the future and say, "Here, look at these alternatives" too.
As for the CommBlog, there could be a shorter post for contributors explaining that feedback is needed and this is the opportunity to help shape an impact on the tool that is shipped by default with Fedora and so on. The CommBlog article could also point to the Magazine article as a reference for checking out alternatives.
This is my take on it, what do you all think?

To be clear -- I would like to see the article focus more on helping users choose something they like to use, as opposed to having hundreds of people "drop in" to the list to give random opinions. That can break down the mailing list discussion value quickly. I'd probably drop the angle of the mailing list discussion except as a side note.

Sounds good. I will work on that over the next week... I need to get some additional apps installed on my testing machine and take some screenies; review features.
