Read this article: http://enterprise.linux.com/enterprise/07/02/21/1340237.shtml?tid=23&tid... . I think we have to reflect on this pamphlet, and we have to answer him, directly or indirectly.
I hope that some developers can help us understand deeper the objections and work together to change the situation.
Thanks very much

OMG! Weep and cry, o beloved brethren, His Überhackerness Eric S. Raymond had a dependency problem! Yikes!
And what happened? ESR has just left the building... ... well, nothing lost there.
His Überhackerness is so happy with Click 'n' Run, let him play with that.
And, to my great surprise, he closes the deal with a little praise of Ubuntu! Where have I seen thát before? Not without having pissed a little on "free software", which is the well he bloody well knows he drinks from.
Well Eric, you just have to wait for two more releases and Ubuntu will load your favourite blob by default! Congratulations, dude!
regards, Herman

I think Alan Cox's short answer was the best. Beyond that, there's not much to say.

Before I loaded the URL I knew he would be complaining because we have not accepted proprietary and patent encumbered formats.
I think the fact that he still harps on that point diminishes the credibility of the rest of his arguments.
I am personally quite glad that Fedora has a long term vision of a world of truly free software, one which can't exist if in order to get useful things done we must load up on non-free formats. Non-free formats carry a high price even if they cost no money directly.
It is unfortunate that a more long term perspective seems irreconcilable with ESR's short term wishes for desktop domination.

Hello there, Please do not reply to him, he is just a loser. He intentionnally wanted to make mass publicity of his actions. See the CC: of his mail. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-February/msg01006.htm...
Don't feed the troll. See Christian Iseli made us a wonderful picture with some flowers. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-February/msg01009.htm...
Some users leave fedora, other new users download and install fedora. Our statistics show us the progress the overall fedora project has made. ESR is just a normal user, just like millions of linux users.

Although I do not approve of ESR's public display of affection, i do not think the above comment is appropriate.
Let us not forget he is a founding member of the OSI, an a former president, and has pushed open source when it was still an infant.
I myself do not agree with ESR's methodology. That said having known ESR for 9 years or so it doesn't surprise me either. ESR is pretty egomaniacal and likes to cause waves. This is just another one of his waves.
Regardless of his credentials lot's of people have pushed open source since it's infancy without causing as much as a stir or without having to take issues public.

Yeah, I wouldn't call him a loser. He's just fresh outta relevance.
