Ill talk about a Mandriva Install Party in Strasbourg later on which
Im planning to attend.
Why? of course not to install Mandriva, but rather know how they are doing :)
Ive made a draft Impress presentation for FC5 with the beats and
PressRelease materials, if ever I found time to give a preview of FC5
over there :)
I have not yet completed it. ( http://beta.glwb.info/FC5LIVEFedora.odp )
Anything I missed ? Im thinking too to add it in the livecd :)

Ok, I was at that Mandriva Day as they call it.
in brief:
I went with my girlfriend and we were late :)
we came just in time for the multimedia conference and the audience
consisted of 11 persons. Most of them are newbies to linux. (75%)
The conferences were for beginner level.
The guys responsible for the event are no more than 23 years old.
They were lecturers of a Computer Science Institute which is
affiliated to Mandriva.

Ive chatted with them about Fedora and Kadischi (of course) during the break.
One of the lecturers was mostly interested with Kadischi since he is
actually giving practical classes on how to build Mandriva Live cds.
He explained me about the scripts they were working on and I showed
him Kadischi's code.
But when I asked him whether I can have a look at THEIR code, he
bubbled "No No nooo" and ran away.
I told myself "What a lamer"!
The install party:
6 guys (Im not among) were ready to get the machines experience their
first ever linux distro
The install party was really a disaster. Mandriva 2006 was not stable at all.
- 5/6 machines had xorg issues
- urpmi is not installed on a fresh install, hence a complete newbie
can't update
- no assistance by the 'lecturers' for drivers installation and questions
It was really a big disaster and shame for Mandriva when one of the
lecturers answered the question " In windows we have openoffice 2.*,
can I have it in Linux? "
Answer: For the moment there is only openoffice 2.* for Windows
platform, but Mandriva will be the first to have it.
Can you imagine this ?!!
( I was shocked by this reply )
For this, my girlfriend has intervened and showed that in
openoffice.org it is possible to download OOo 2.*
I spent most of my time troubleshooting those machines, and installing
cool applications (yakuake, ksmoothdock, katapult, 3ddesktop,....)
just to promote linux's image.

other's mistakes, our own successes should become more frequent.

I have to agree. We don't live in a vacuum, and I regularly run into
over-marketing of other distros and, often in tandem,
mis-understandings of what Fedora is.
So many people who have _never_ used Fedora Core call it "unstable."
It is based on 100% assumptions of what Fedora Core is, and 0% actual
usage. Or in the best case, they had an issue with the installer and
left it at that.
In fact, if I were going to build a marketing campaign for Fedora
Core, I'd do the following:
Newbie focus like ...
"These system builders pre-install Fedora Core:"
"For maximum compatibility and ease-of-administration, you want
Fedora Core on your new PC out-of-the-box."
Seasoned focus like ...
"This isn't your dad's Linux"
"More than just an installer"
"Dependency hell? Fedora users have never heard of it!"
And maybe even more direct ...
"You say you haven't used Red Hat since Red Hat Linux 9, but you
say Fedora Core is unstable? Have you actually tried it? Have you
tried more than just its installer?"
"Fedora Core 5, all the new features of Fedora Core 4, improved."

Yes, but as a an ambassador marketing Fedora Core isn't about coaxing
one to
believe something other than what they already do, but to prove what
they believe
whether it be unstability or what-not to not actually be _fact_.
Anyhow. I just got back from a doctors office and he has never heard of
Fedora Core
or Redhat, but I briefly explained it to him and he seemed to
acknowledge the _facts_.

I agree, but only in the theoretical point of view.
You aren't promoting other distributions, therefore thier failures
shouldn't apply.

If we learn from the failures, then yes it does apply. In general, as
long as we don't turn this into a pissing contest and indulge is
unproductive distro wars, we are all good.

Agreed. That's what a lot of other people do.
Everytime all I do is focus on what Fedora Core does and does not do.
I do _not_ try to contrast and compare to other distributions. I
let the distribution stand for itself.
That's the only way to deal with the nay-sayers. Especially the ones
that have never touched Fedora Core themselves, or haven't gotten
past the installer before saying, "ewww, too Red Hat-like."
Ironic because some of the worst nay-sayers are former Red Hat users
and knew nothing else. Most of them are sour because when the freely
redistributable version of Linux with the "Red Hat(R)" was gone, they
couldn't justify it with their boss anymore. The key is to showing
how much Fedora Core has improved since the end of the Red Hat Linux
line.
And that's actually pretty easy to do. And for those that don't want
to listen, they just get enfuriated, and you ignore them. You just
stick to focusing on Fedora Core.
