Hi
What we have now is a bunch of screenshots and videos
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tours/FedoraCore5) and a small overview
in the release notes
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/OverView). We need to revamp
the tour to be a more descriptive and appealing overview of Fedora Core
5 at a glance by combining these efforts and including your own magic
finishing touches. You can include screencasts as documented in
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ScreenCasting. You got about 15 days or so
for the Fedora Core 5 Launch.
Anyone wants to take a grab at this?

Byzanz which is also part of Fedora Extras is available and it can be
used instead to produce a animated GIF file instead of a OGG theora
movie. Check the reference in the screencasting document above.

We should still consider a Flash version. We are also targetting non-fedora
users and Flash is on 98% of machines. Ogg theora limits the reach quite a
lot, in fact nearly all of the folks able to view it without installing
something new are folks already on Linux, and perhaps Fedora.
Otherwise this becomes a Fedora tour of Fedora's navel for the Fedora choir.

Use byzanz and produce a animated GIF. That should be viewable in any
operating system out of the box. Ogg codecs play well in WinAmp 5+ in
Windows and Direct codecs for Windows Media player and others are
available at http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/

Why animated GIF is less preferable: quality loss in images will be
huge, and no sound can be integrated. And yes, did I mention that this
animation will not be in any way interactive?

Remember that when creating such items we should be following the
documentation guidelines for things like screen shots and captures. I
heard on the Wiki Tour there were some screen shots that had items on
the desktop that did not follow these, something about a gdesklets
weather applet I have not checked it out yet.

I'm happy to convert the Oggs as they are completed. That way it's
consistent and there's always an Ogg before or even if there's a Flash. It's
much harder to go from flv/swf > ogg than ogg> flv/swf anyway.

What is the procedure to do such conversions? Can you document these
steps or refer to links so that more than one person can work on these

and there are several Ogg theora movies which can act as guinea pigs and
might benefit from a Flash alternative.

The point is, any tours should only show a desktop that came from Core.
Extras is enabled but not as clear to new users, so we would be showing
an application they can't "find" in the Core install, which leads to a
loss of credibility in our tour.

Ya but we want two different things. A general Fedora tour for everyone
and a release specific tour for users who want to know what has changed.
The latter can be thought of a more non technical version of the release
notes.

Since we're *primary* targeting Windows users, is it acceptable to produce video
format
for windows users?
For example, I've been using VMWare workstation to capture videos in AVI format.
I have no problem converting to OGG format for Linux users but it would be also
beneficial if we upload AVI format for Windows users as well.
The only problem I noticed with this video format (VMware video aka VMnc codec), you
might need to install "VMware Movie Decoder Utility" for windows from:

targeting Windows users as long as there are alternative media which
plays out of the box in Fedora and is producible using a Fedora toolchain.

the important functionality which istanbul accomplishes can be done
via the cmdline with gstreamer cmdline tools if there is a need as
long as you have the gst 0.8.12 on your system.
gst 0.8.12 is finally available in fc4 updates-testing so don't even
technically need anything from core-development or extras to
get-er-done on fc4. You can use gst-launch and build a shell
scriptable command to do the screen capture to a raw file.. then
another gst-launch command to re-encode it to ogg... mimicing what
istanbul wraps into UI gloss. For development/FC5, the gst08 cmdline
tools will most likely be back into Extras in time for fc5 release,
even if istanbul doesn't get rebuilt in time.
Oh and if you are really really clever.. you can do a gst-launch
command that records audio at the same time as its capturing the
screen.. something istanbul doesn't do yet.
