Fedora Presentation Video

[Thomas Canniot]

Hello everybody !

When i last saw Puneet's work in flash it gave me some ideas... first
that i really think we need a advertisement video to play on loop on
booth for example! People really like videos.

I'm introducing here what i've done tonight, the beginning of a video
introducing Fedora Core. It is still in development, i have many ideas
about a lot of things.

Here it is : http://www.mrtomlinux.org/fedora-movie.avi (2Mo)

To play it, even if it no kind of divx video, i was not able to play it
with totem, but xine, without any properietary codec read it very well.

I would like to have feedbacks, as many as possible, about speed, visual
effects and the more important, content. For the moment i am adding the
headlines the the http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Overview page, i don't
think i will include them all.

The file format has not been decided yet, i don't think i will keep this
raw avi file format.

How do you convert into ogg?

Thomas, although the ffmpeg2theora software you talk about on the Wiki
page is open source, it is not "free," because it depends on the legally
encumbered ffmpeg software to function.  I am not clear on whether this
is appropriate to be on the wiki.  I think it would be a much better
idea to work with Thomas Canniot on a way of creating videos on his
favored platform which are not encumbered with the ffmpeg requirement.

Although your work is definitely appreciated, this how-to is useless for
people who are keeping their Fedora systems clear of non-free software.
I would appreciate others' opinions, though, on how we could solve the
problem with truly free software.  Thomas Canniot is giving generously
of his free time to create these videos, so we need to be sure to help
him do it as efficiently as possible.

ffmpeg2theora *binary* is free and its source is licensed under GPL v.2
To use ffmpeg2theora *binary* alone to convert videos,  it does not
require ffmpeg nor any proprietary codecs.

I sent a reply back, with what I hope is a polite and reasonable
explanation as to why this reasoning is unsound.  Just so no one on the
list gets the wrong idea, I think your heart's in the right place but
you simply misunderstand the way the software works.

Whether a binary requires external libraries is not, in itself, proof
that it is not patent-encumbered.  The ffmpeg2theora binary is
unacceptable because it has the ffmpeg functions statically compiled in.
You can verify this through looking at the source code -- which includes
a script to pull down the ffmpeg source code from CVS -- or you can rely
on the fact that, in order to decode ffmpeg data, a program *MUST* have
access to patent-encumbered functions.  There's just no other way to do
it; it's not magic, it's just a fact of life.

I'm pretty sure there are formats out there that are not similarly
encumbered, and which we could probably get Thomas Canniot to put his
"raw" video into, and then we could convert it to Ogg Theora.  We just
need to (a) find someone who knows media files well enough to figure out
the correct legally unencumbered format, and (b) convert it to Theora.
That's assuming that we can't figure out how Thomas can produce Ogg
Theora himself, which may also be possible.

can figure out the right answer shortly.

Thomas (Canniot), can you get in touch with Thomas (Chung) and put up a
new wiki page describing to people how you can create these movies in a
non-proprietary format, and convert to Ogg?  I don't know much about
video formats, so I'm hoping you two could report on the tools available
on, or for, Fedora to do some of this stuff.  That would be really
helpful for people who want to get into the creative aspects.

The point is not necessarily that we have to do all of this ON Fedora,
because the products available on our platform right now are not as
efficient as some of the proprietary solutions.  But maybe we can help
figure out, at the same time as we're creating materials, where the gaps
are in the toolchain, so they can be addressed.

Well, i searched a bit about converting avi videos files into ogg
theora, and the only viable thing i found was ffmpeg2theora, which is
also the only converter available from theora.org.

That page is for slide show presentations on specific subjects.  I think
the tour page, or even a separate video page, would be more appropriate
for marketing and public relations materials like this one.

It's a bit more worse than that. Proprietary Java can be solved
technically. We already do that by shipping an environment that runs a
large many Java programs out of the box in Fedora. Patents cannot be
solved by hacking on it. It is a ugly political issue.
