At Kitware we are heavily engaged in medical research and so our requirements are towards high-end scientific computing software. The open source tools that we use, and the general requirements that they address are:<br><br>

+ VTK- the visualization toolkit for 3D rendering, interaction, volume rendering, and informatics <a href="http://vtk.org">vtk.org</a><br>+ ITK- the Insight segmentation and registration toolkit for image processing, segmentation and registration <a href="http://itk.org">itk.org</a><br>

+ 3D Slicer- a clinical research platform built on open-source tools like VTK and VTK <a href="http://slicer.org">slicer.org</a><br>+ IGSTK- the image guided surgery toolkit with device tracking and display igstk,org<br>
+ MIDAS- multimedia data server which is used for storing, accessing and processing medical data <a href="http://www.kitware.com/midasindex.html">http://www.kitware.com/midasindex.html</a><br>
<br>and because we have significant concerns about software quality and regulatory control we use the CMake/CTest/CDash suite of software process tools <a href="http://cmake.org">cmake.org</a> and <a href="http://cdash.org">cdash.org</a>. Finally, GUI development and integration tools are typically Qt and Python.<br>

<br>To actually see how these tools are used, look at the NAMIC web pages <a href="http://na-mic.org">na-mic.org</a> and wiki <a href="http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/Main_Page">http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/Main_Page</a>. NAMIC is one of seven US National Centers for Biomedical Computing funded by the NIH and the licenses used by the NAMIC suite of software are generally BSD or LGPL.<br>
