audio/media related reports to bugzilla.redhat.com ignored?
by Niels Mayer 30 Mar '26

For audio/media related apps and issues reported on bugzilla.redhat.com , this is the pattern: bugs get filed, they're never acknowledged && totally ignored. Eventually people stop filing bug reports as it ends up being a waste of time and the quality of the distro goes down as result.... https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566665 [abrt] instability from snd-mtpav on PCI parallel port, causes crash in jack-audio-connection-kit-0.118.0-1.fc12 (edit) https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=588965 [abrt] crash in gnome-media-apps-2.28.5-1.fc12: Process /usr/bin/gstreamer-properties was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV) (edit) https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=602900 [abrt] crash in alsa-tools-1.0.22-1.fc12: ____strtol_l_internal: Process /usr/bin/envy24control was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV) (edit) https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=602903 envy24control "Reset Peaks" button nonfunctional; metering shows no peaks Niels http://nielsmayer.com PS: the above is not my experience with non-media related bugs, which are handled quickly and effectively, e.g.: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=575875 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=445543#c20

Re: [Fedora-music-list] Good hardware specs for a "Fedora Music" box?

I would like to be able to record stuff from guitar, midi-keyboard, microphone, DJ setup (via line input I suppose), and then edit the results with the appropriate applications. Not all at once, but maybe 1-3 inputs at a time. The ability to play in real-time through the computer's output would be very important I think as I reckon it's much harder to work any other way. That's all I can think of right now. I currently have an SB Live with the LiveDrive thing, which has all the inputs I need, but I am thinking in terms of general system horsepower (RAM/CPU/disk etc). Finding a supported sound card it's really a problem, I'll just go with M-Audio for that. But I would like to know if I need to get one to do what I want. K. -- Kev Green, aka Kyrian. To fully test you'll need a guitar and pickup plugged into your soundcard, but even a go/nogo on whether it starts would be helpful. Where I developed the package, it works OK, but another older AMD machine, it fails during startup. This will help me to decide whether to push it to the F8,F9 updates repos. DaveT.

whysynth doesn't work
by Florin Andrei 06 Jan '26

I got whysynth-dssi-20060122-7.src.rpm from here: http://people.redhat.com/green/FE/devel/ I rebuilt it on FC6 without problems. The thing is, the GUI doesn't show up. The program appears to be working, I see the outputs being automatically routed in qjackctl, but there's no GUI anywhere! ############################################### $ jack-dssi-host whysynth.so jack-dssi-host: Warning: DSSI path not set jack-dssi-host: Defaulting to "/usr/local/lib/dssi:/usr/lib/dssi:/home/florin/.dssi" jack-dssi-host: OSC URL is: osc.udp://rivendell.home.local:15040/dssi/whysynth/WhySynth/chan00 host: Ready WhySynth_gtk starting (pid 4305)... ############################################### -- Florin Andrei http://florin.myip.org/

Low Latency vs. Real Time Kernel
by Brian Monroe 10 Nov '14

I've been spending a lot of time on the #opensourcemusicians channel talking to Ubuntu Studio users about their kernel and latency times they're getting. Seems like most of them are using g a stock kernel with the preemptive option enabled and they are getting great latency results (2ms)while utilizing the @audio group on their user. I ended up compiling my own low latency kernel and I haven't had any issues with it yet. If this is what we are missing for the spin I'd be happy to maintain packaging for the kernel. I know ccrma has been behind a few kernel releases. I saw the instructions for adding the real time patch for a tick less kernel and from what I can tell it wouldn't be hard to get that rolling as well. I'm not entirely sure what ccrma does differently with their kernels compared to other Linux users, and I'm still a bit of a noob so I could be off base with this, but I would reason that we should be able to just utilize the same settings to archive similar performance enhancements. I thought I read that ccrma uses a unique scheduler, but if we could get a 2ms latency time without it, the point may be moot.

Fedora Jam tracking well
by Brendan Jones 06 Nov '13

Currently number 5 out of 11 for torrent downloads! Not bad for the new kid. Its very quiet on this list at the moment, so tell us what you've been doing with music! Fedora / Linux / recording etc etc Me, I've been trying to organize my many samples into sfz format for use. Also found new interest in guitar (my new schecter rocks!) I'm no drummer, but have been studying drumming a lot lately to fill out some triggered recordings. Would love to hear other peoples experience in this area. kick out the jams Brendan
