new packages in Fedora updates-testing (2010-06-02)

Hi all,

We have a couple updates in testing:

aldrin-0.13-4, armstrong-0.2.6-11:
I finally fixed the issues in 32bit systems. These should work now out
of the box. Note that these are my last F-11 updates. F-11 will be
discontinued soon.

canorus-0.7-6.R1213.20100530svn:
This project started promising. But at some point the developers
seemed to lost interest. It gets updates pretty rarely. Anyone using
it?

ardour-2.8.9-1:
The big brother has an update.

Other than these I updated jconvolver and jack_capture in rawhide,
which both had very minor changes (a couple lines of code at best).
Since we have a new updates policy in Fedora [1,2], which didn't turn
to be as bad as I feared, I don't want to push such minor updates to
repos. Please file a bug at bugzilla if you want them in F-13 or F-12,
so I have a reference to show when I make builds.

I tried to get in touch once more with the jack maintainer of Fedora
for the jack2 update. No response yet.

Other than these, David Cornette made another package for us:

As a datapoint, I was interested enough in this project (
http://frinika.appspot.com/ ) that I installed it from SVN several
weeks ago.How many DAW's can you launch via URL (provided you have
java installed, along with java-web-start):
http://frinika.appspot.com/launch/launch.jnlp .

Frinika also has some neat features and UI.... plus there's not that
many complete java apps for music, and this one is a pretty good
representative... Plus, there's gobs of working Java code in here,
which is perhaps easier to reuse/extend than other DAWs out there.
Supposedly it works with Jack too, but I wasn't able to get it going
w/ jack in my brief evaluation:

PS: just picked up update jconvolver-0.8.7-1.fc12.ccrma.x86_64... glad
to see it now contains all the missing wav files (e.g.
/usr/share/jconvolver/reverbs/sala-concerti-cdm/stereo-A-tail-ML.wav )
that I had previously installed separately from a Mandriva rpm
jconvolver-reverbs-0.8.4-2mdv2010.1.noarch ...

I have tried it and I don't like it. As you said it started promising.
But I'm afraid this is an example of much ambition but not enough 
manpower: The development team and the number of contributors and the 
time they are able/willing are just too small. I have no right to blame 
them, I don't give them much help either. But Canorus does have potential, 
it just needs some (a lot of?) work. Anyone willing to help ?

At this moment NtEd and Muse Score (mscore) are more interesting IMO. I 
don't know about denemo, I never really tried that one. AT first sight I 
did not understand how to use it.

If I would judge the program just from this screenshot, it's notation 
sucks. But it probably means the screenshot was made by someone who still 
thinks you can make scores with a computer without needing any musical 
knowledge.

Yeah, that's a problem I have too. It was *a lot* of work to get
frinika into Fedora. Upstream bundles many external libraries in their
sources. Since Fedora has a strict policy to package libraries
separately, I had to fish them out one by one. Along the way, I
figured that some of the libraries themselves were bundling other
libraries, so they needed to be patched out and packaged separately.
After a lot of work, by me and the reviewers, and going down multiple
layers of dependency tracking, we finally managed to make an RPM for
frinika. It is still very time consuming to maintain, since I have to
rewrite all the patches when there is an update in frinika or in one
of the libraries. Given that after all this work, it still does not
work properly with jack, I started to doubt that it was worth the
effort. But I'll keep it (and all the java sound libraries) if you
guys like the application.
