Getting started?

Ive been on this list for a while, and have noted that its been somewhat
quiet. So i've just googled Ardour seeing it mentioned and it looks
great! Ive kept googling, and there seems to be a hole where FC6 is.
Like many probably I currently run FC6, and according to most references
up to FC5 is supported, although there is a couple of mentions of FC7.

Do the packages exist for FC6, and if so, where? Can anyone recommend a
couple of good apps to take a look at?

I also have a couple of musically inclined friends who I recently built
a PC for, and set it up with FC6 and Windows. It lives in the room with
their keyboards, midi and other music gear etc, and now they have
accidentally trashed the windows install and say that FC6 runs great and
they're happy to keep using it only. They say its better for uni work
and the interface is easyer to use than 'doze. They just wish Cubase or
Sibelius ran on it. I'd love to get some good linux music apps on there
for them to try (and have a bit of a play with myself)!

Ardour 0.99.3 is available in Fedora Extras for FC6, you should be able
to install it with Yum or Pirut if you are connected to the Internet,
something like:

# yum install ardour

For sequencing there are a number of options, I tend to use Rosegarden:

http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/

There are others as well: Muse and Seq24 for example.  Installing
Rosegarden would be:

# yum install rosegarden4

Docs out of date, see:

Basically install "planetccrma-core" and you will get a realtime kernel,
irq ordering script, pam with realtime access enabled by default, etc,
etc (if you need/want low latency you need all that). Then
"planetccrma-apps" will get you most of the applications from both
Extras and Planet CCRMA[*].

sound/music apps nicely categorized, at least the ones coming from
Planet CCRMA.

But thats what the current thread is about, having both versions? I also
fear my video drivers will break with the rt kernel since I use the
nvidia binary packages from livna. I can fix this by hand with nvidias
installer, but I guess thats the problem with closed source stuff and
mixing and matching from different repos.

Ugh.. I guess upstream was wrong when they said you can install both 
ardour 0.99.3 and ardour 2 in parallel.

Nando, what do you think?  One solution would be to drop the .mo files 
from the proposed ardour0, have it depend on ardour (2), and hope that 
the messages are backwards compatible.

This is something I don't understand, looks like a bug (feature?) in
yum?. I have both installed in fc6. So I erased them and tried:
  install both in the same transaction: fails
  install ardour, then install ardour2: fine
  install ardour2, then install ardour: fine

Argh...
So... install, say, ardour and then go for planetccrma-apps (I'll erase
"ardour" from the meta package later - for now).

For some reason yum barfs on installing both, but yum installing them
separately succeeds, so for now do:

yum install ardour
  yum install planetccrma-apps

I think some users have had success with rebuilding the glue layer on
nvidia's driver with the Planet CCRMA rt kernel but I have not done it
myself (you'll need to install the proper kernel-rt-devel package for
that to work).
