Is there some plugin I don't know about or is it an attempt to cater for people who don't want to use standard notation?

I'm not sure who put it there, but I very frequently use Inkscape as a "post- processing tool" when I've finished with LilyPond. Some things are much easier with Inkscape than LilyPond.
That said, is it required on the default live spin? I'm not sure.

Inkscape is also very useful for making album artwork. Not something directly (or at all) related to music production but...
