Hi,
Hello!
(CCd neurofedora mailing list)
I am Chaitree. I have been working in the field of machine learning for 4 years now and I am interested in computational neuroscience. I came across post regarding trainee requirement for NeuroFedora project and I am excited to know if I can contribute too. It looks like excellent opportunity.
Welcome to NeuroFedora! It's lovely to meet you.
However, I have few queries.
- What are the skills required if I would like to contribute?
None at all. You will be able to learn whatever you need while tinkering with your tasks. That's how we all learn in FOSS :)
- Is the Neuroscience background necessary? I have experience in ML
frameworks, and python but don't have background in neuroscience.
No, while it's good to have some domain knowledge, at the moment, NeuroFedora is very focussed on the software side of things. So, while you work with Neuroscience tools, you'll have the chance to learn about them depending on your personal interests.
- What is the kind of work that will get assigned and how much time will I
need to spend per week and when?
We're part of the Fedora community, which is a Free/Open Source Software community. At the moment, NeuroFedora is also very much focussed on adding neuroscience tools to Fedora/NeuroFedora. So, tasks would be related to: - building software from source to supply it to Fedora users: as rpms and then as containers, - keeping documentation up to date, - testing software, learning how to use it, - outreach/marketing to share information about NeuroFedora, FOSS, and Open Science
- What kind of trainings you will be giving if there will be any?
We don't hold training sessions---not like one may get at an internship. We help you find a task you are interested in, and we'll help you find the right resources to learn the skills needed to carry out your tasks. The complete Fedora/NeuroFedora community will be at your disposal whenever you want to ask a query.
I hope that helps. Please join any of the communication channels and keep talking to the team. That'll help you get to know the people and the project better.

Thank you for your response. I would love to know more about what kind of tasks are there and what could interest me. I have already joined on LinkedIn I suppose. Will it be okay to start a discussion there? Also, in general how much time needs to be dedicated? I understand that it might be highly dependent on type of task and expertise, but just needed idea in general.
Regards, Chaitree

The contributor roles are listed here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/neurofedora/contributing/
It's all under the Fedora community's umbrella, so you can learn more about Fedora in general here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/
I have already joined on LinkedIn I suppose. Will it be okay to start a discussion there?
I've subscribed you to the mailing list, so it's perhaps best to keep the conversation going here? LinkedIn is not the most convenient platform for discussion and while we do have a group there, I don't think we're too active there.
Also, in general how much time needs to be dedicated? I understand that it might be highly dependent on type of task and expertise, but just needed idea in general.
We're all volunteers with jobs and families, so a few hours a week is what we're generally able to devote to NeuroFedora.
Sure. Will discuss in this group. I'll go through the contributor roles list you mentioned and get back with questions if any.
Thank you.
Regards, Chaitree

That sounds great.
These roles are only the ones that we're working on at the moment, but you can always create a new role that interests you. We (the Fedora community in general) will help you learn the skills and gain access to resources wherever possible.
Hi everyone,
I was inclined to the contributors role where we get to interact with softwares in neuroFedora. Learn how the software works and test the softwares extensively for functionality. I believe the role 'file bugs and report general issues' would be better.
Kindly suggest the role accordingly if I am wrong. Also, could someone please help me get started and give some materials that I can go through and learn more about my role.
Thank you.
Regards, Chaitree
