Fedora Weekly News meeting summary 2009-01-30
by Pascal Calarco
Thanks to all who were able to attend today's FWN meeting. Transcript
is available at:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/NewsProject/Meetings/2009-01-30
Summary:
Participants:
Adam Batkin
Nicu Buculei
Pascal Calarco
Oisin Feeley
1. Dormant beats
* we would like to find active writers for the Ambassadors, Marketing,
and Security Week beats, at a minimum
* Pascal will follow up with current Ambassador and Marketing writers,
and send a note out to the lists if they are not able to continue; Oisin
will ask David Nalley for suggestions for the Security Week beat, since
David is doing the Fedora updates beat each week
2. Formatting issues
* we thought it would be useful to investigate what MediaWiki
conventions were available, and create some wiki scratch space to try
these out, ie. <pkg> and other tagging
* Oisin and Pascal will reach out to the Docs folks to see if these are
documented, and work with them to possibly add these to the wiki
StyleGuide for others to use as well
* Pascal will update the FWN StyleGuide to indicate that person
references should ideally reference the appropriate User: wiki page, if
it exists. If it does not, we will use CamelCase references as a fallback
* Oisin and Pascal will submit a request for Design work from the Art
Team to help with a new wiki banner; also will consult with IanWeller
and Mo for other FWN wiki styling updates
* Oisin will update the FWN StyleGuide to direct writers to start using
the ref: cite module convention for links, which is much cleaner;
Editors will need to convert all numbered references to ref: beginning
with the next issue
3. Fedora Magazine
* Oisin and Pascal will contact Jonathon Roberts to discuss Fedora Magazine
* specifically: 1) investigate how to export from MediaWiki to e.g.
wordpress or whatever is the CMS du jour supported by infrastrucure; 2)
contact JonRob to ask what his plans are
* Adam Batkin indicated he can help out occasionally
* Pascal can devote some time to this also
* Nicu is happy to have his weekly webcomic syndicated in Fedora Magazine
* Nicu also suggested that the Art team was thinking about wallpaper
photos of the week, which could be incorporated into Fedora Magazine
* the meeting adjourned at 13:59 UTC.

virt for 161
by Dale Bewley
Hi all. I'm out of town with catch as catch can internet access. I have free time, but no internet. I may find some time online as late as sunday evening. Or not.
If I do not mark the beat as complete by 9 EST, please feel free to take what is there. I will be traveling by that point.
/me ponders downloading the mailing list archives and "wiki editing" offline...

Fedora News IRC meeting?
by Pascal Calarco
Greetings FWN contributors --
Oisin and I have been thinking it would be a good idea to pull together
an IRC meeting of the folk involved with Fedora Weekly News. There are
several issues we should discuss, including:
1. Dormant beats
2. Formatting
i. Use of templates, e.g. Dale's use of the pkg template
ii. Citation/reference hyperlinks à la OpenSuSE mag
iii. Possibly a new header/logo (sourced from Art people?)
3. Fedora Magazine. Is it worth the effort?
Feel free to offer other issues for discussion as well here on the list.
I think most of us here in North America are in Eastern time zone, but I
could well be wrong -- please let us know if anyone is further west. I
added Max, Nicu, and Runa, and came up with this schedule (assuming that
Huzaifa is in the same timezone or earlier than Runa):
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?month=2&day=2&year...
UTC 12:00 - 14:00 seems like the most reasonable window for all
involved; we may have to go later if there are folks further west from us.
Now, the #fedora-meeting channel schedule is at:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_meeting_channel
It looks like we could meet Monday, Wednesday, or Friday given this
schedule. We'd like to suggest 1/30 to the team, sometime between 12:00
- 14:00 UTC.
Would people be able to meet on this date and between these hours, and
does anyone have any other suggested topics? We'll go with a date and
time when most can be at the meeting. Many thanks!

Ask Fedora Beat
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
Please add this to the Ask Fedora Beat this week. I have trouble editing
the wiki pages. Chris Tyler, your answer is still pending
---
A question on Ext4, that has already been made the default in the
development tree headed for Fedora 11 was answered by Eric Sandeen, Red
Hat Ext4 and XFS filesytems developer.
Contributing Writer: Eric Sandeen
Francesco Frassinelli <fraph24(a)gmail.com> wrote:
I've read that in F11 ext4 will be the default filesystem. What about
ext4 on solid state disk? Many websites and bloggerssay that it's
better to use ext2 because of the journaling, but in some kind of
operation (like applying upgrades) it's sooo slow. Could we'll use
ext4 on our ssd without compromising theirs life?
TBH I haven't tested ext4 on ssd yet, though we do have some in the lab,
I just haven't done it.
Eric Sandeen replied:
By default ext4 still journals pretty much the same as ext3 does, so if
you want to minimize writes to your flash, it should not be
significantly better than ext3 in that respect.
However, there is a patch to ext4 (merged soon if not already) to allow
it to run in a no-journal mode, so that may be a good option.

FWN 160
by Pascal Calarco
Hi folks --
So far there are two beats marked as complete. I've checked these and
added them to the start of FWN 160. I'll check back in about two hours
and edit and add any others that come in by that time.
I'm busy with meetings tonight and will be travelling tomorrow for much
of the day, so I'll need to pass the rest of FWN 160 work to Oisin and
Huzaifa, or I can get back to this probably around 5:00 pm Eastern time
on Monday.
Thanks to everyone who has confirmed for next Friday's IRC meeting.
I'll work on an agenda page next for that.
Cheers,
- pascal
