SanDisk Extreme III Test Cards

Good morning everyone. I have been working with SanDisk and Arrow Electronics to source the SD Cards you've spec'd for the Fedora on OLPC project. If anyone would like to test on the OEM version[1] of the cards, I can mail them to you at cost. So $30US. I'll pay the postage. ~Karlie [1] - Why is OEM important? When any sort of flash memory is produced there are minute differences with the internal structure. For this project we'll need to use an OEM part which ensures that we have the same card structure with every SD we send through the duplicator. Retail packaged cards do not have a consistent internal structure which can cause quality issues with a duplication run. It's not that retail is inferior quality, but for day to day use (in a camera, phone or other application) write tolerances don't need to be as precise.

Announcing Fedora Sugar Spin!

With this spin, you'll be able to run Sugar, which is developed by Sugarlabs and the desktop environment used on the OLPC, directly from a Live CD! Activities packaging

A general note about activities packaging... It seem like some of the packages submitted for review uses git snapshots. I would prefer to get releases from upstream for various reasons. I wrote a script to make it trivial to make a source release and I'm figuring out the best way to solicit activity authors to get in the habit. Marco

Builds are failing because numpy grew a dependency on python-nose; we could pin numpy back to the old version, accept the new dependency on python-nose (200KB compressed), or fork the package. Fedora 10 on SD Card for the XO

Here's the URL for the pre-order SD cards for the XO. http://on-disk.com/product_info.php/products_id/595 This comes about 3 weeks before the One Laptop Per Child Give One Get One promotion starts and exactly 4 weeks until the release of F10. Use this time to encourage people to visit http://laptop.org and talk up just how spectacular the XO is. Remember, there are lots of people out there who will stand in line for days waiting to buy electronics and this is their chance to have something 'exclusive' since the XO isn't something you can buy at your local electronics store. With the F10 option for the XO, adults who may not find the child focused graphical interface called Sugar practical for daily use, Fedora allows the XO to behave in a more familiar way. In this sense, the XO is on-par with any small form factor laptop except your purchase of an XO during the Give One Get One promotion directly effects the lives of children. Again, thinking about all those people who don't think twice about buying smart phones, game systems, and the like - there's no corporate profit with the XO, just a chance to better the lives of children all over the world. ~Karlie Robinson

Hi all, I have missed the October Fedora 10 XO test call, so I am a "freelance" tester ;-). BTW, this is part of my "job" as grassrootler working at OLPC France! I have a problem with my the snapshot#3: I copied it to a 4 GB SanDisk Ultra II SDHC card (in the stores here in France, the recommended Extreme III have no more than 2 GB). Hi fedora-news and fedora-olpc folk -- The OLPC beat for FWN is complete[1] for FWN 149. I struggled with how much detail to put into this from the OLPC-Community weekly that Jim Gettys sends out, an opted to be verbose, not really knowing where to stop :) I'd appreciate feedback on whether I should simply reference the OLPC-Community weekly news and pull out announcements only, or whether it is actually useful to highlight the software work going on at OLPC. XO - XFCE test team

Greetings, There's been a lot of buzz around using a more lightweight desktop environment on the XO. After some discussion/debate, I'd like to invite folks to sign-up to the XFCE test team for Fedora 10 on the XO. While GNOME will continue to be the desktop offered with this years G1G1, I certainly don't want to discourage folks from testing alternatives. I do want to emphasize though that GNOME is the primary focus for Fedora on the XO. The work that Josh Bresser's and the Performance Test team is doing is very important in identifying memory/cpu/"disk" hogs on the XO. Additionally, I am by no means an XFCE expert (or even a user). Moving OLPC merge to mainline forwards

OK, To begin the merge of the OLPC branches into mainline I'm going to start attacking the easy list (IE number 3 from my previous email - inc below). For the packages like the libertas firmware its just a matter of moving the newer builds that are in the OLPC branches into rawhide and getting them built. I presume as joyride is still FC-9 based we'd push it into that branch as well to keep it as clean as possible when the rebase occurs. Alot of the OLPC only packages don't have anything in devel anyway, and the last just need a final check that there any differences between OLPC/F-9/rawhide before they're untagged so as to pull the mainline package. Any objections? I've requested uberpackager to assist in getting that done, not sure if anyone here can approve that. Once they're built mainline who do I need to bother and how to get the branch untagged? For section 2 of the previous emaill [1] below I've discovered they'll be in people's public_rpms dirs on dev.laptop.org so any hints as to the location in that structure I would appreciate it. Hi folks -- I am an Ambassador from Indiana, USA, and also on the editorial team for Fedora Weekly News. I am a librarian and a manager of a computing unit in the Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame. We have a 10-server RHEL/GFS cluster to manage several enterprise business and end-user systems for a consortia of four private colleges located around Notre Dame. Fedora has been my daily desktop environment since FC2, and I've been a linux user on and off since picking up Red Hat Linux 3.03 back around 1996/97 or so. I am going to join the SIG in order to step up coverage of the Fedora OLPC SIG in Fedora Weekly News. I recently attended the Ohio LinuxFest, and the XOs we had at the Fedora booth were a huge draw for attendees, and I think highlighting more of the work of the SIG will pay dividends for the broader Fedora project as a whole. I'm also subscribed to the OLPC community news list, and I'll pull Fedora relevant items from there as well. Problem while building packages

Hi all, Today I started with packaging some of the XO activities for Fedora 9. Unfortunately I not able to build any packages because I'm running in a python trackback. Traceback (most recent call last): File "./setup.py", line 21, in <module> bundlebuilder.start() TypeError: start() takes exactly 1 argument (0 given) Even if I try the sugar-log.spec from Simpon Schampijer I recieve this error message. Missing dependencies? Wrong parameter? Wrong setup of my machine? All hints and tips are welcome. Thanks in advance. Background - I started a conversation on k12osn about getting sugar on LTSP a few months ago. The consensus on the list was that we; Package Sugar for Fedora-done, Start Sugar as a standard x-session-done, Work on shrinking the memory requirements-good progress. At that point, they indicated that they would be willing to take another look at Sugar. Now that the Fedora OLPC team has met the orginal three critria, I have started another thread about what areas we should target next. The requirement that Sugar be on REHL was not an answer to a specific question. It was based on a general LTPS Fedora into RHEL? Is there a backports repository? Yeah, when you selected Open With Extractor it must have only extracted the exe file, and not the DLLs and other tools (7Zip, dd, syslinux). This happens to a lot of people, and I'm not sure of any way to avoid it. Sadly, we have to ship the M$ C & C++ runtimes to ensure that the tool runs on a freshly installed box. The problem with Sebastian's build was that he did not manually add the C++ runtime DLL :( I've made a note of this in the liveusb-creator Developers Guide, and also a note on the front page about having to extract the entire zip before running. Hi all, you may have already noticed, but we've got a Sugar spin based on Fedora up here: http://sdz.fedorapeople.org/olpc/sugar-spin.iso The image itself is already a few days old, and there will be a new one soonish -- but I wanted to wait with a new release until we can get the sugar-browse activity into Fedora and that way on the spin, since this greatly improves the spin's usability. But that's not the main reason for this post: Inspired by an idea from Greg and thanks to help from Luke Macken, we've now a liveusb-creator build for Windows with support for the Sugar spin available here: http://sdz.fedorapeople.org/olpc/liveusb-creator-3.0.zip What does this mean? Well, you can now just run liveusb-creator on Windows and get that way the latest Sugar spin on your USB key, from which you can then boot (once your BIOS supports that). If you try it out and have any feedback, please make sure to come up with it. --Sebastian

joyride 2514 vs rawhide

Hi All, Having had a bit of time over the weekend while on call for work I did some comparisons between packages in rawhide and those in joyride [1] to see what had been merged upstream like what was done back in August or so. The was I worked it out was just a basic grep to remove .fc9 packages as to see what was left. The first 3 sections are easy fix and mostly either the package isn't in Fedora (first section), is using a branch that's not in Fedora cvs (is there a cvs for OLPC packages) or ones that are easy to merge with mainline. It looks like 8.2.0 release is now done so the fixes would be going towards 9.1 one at a guess, and I suspect some of this will be dependent on whether its based on F-9 still or F-10. Anyway, I'm not sure if the info below is useful. Sections 3 and 4 (and at least some in section 2) should be fairly simple to get aligned with mainline fedora devel, and probably pushed to F-9 as well if necessary. I can look to get this done if it would be helpful but if its not I don't want to waste time on it. If so let me know. I think the process would be essentially get any changes/fixes if necessary into mainline and the get joyride to pull the mainline package in rather than the branch. Once that's done the branch would then get marked as dead. So let me know if its a help and if someone wants me to do further. Revisor / yum odd error with f9 updates.newkey repo: Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.8-3 is needed by package glibc-2.8-3.i386

Right now, revisor can build a pristine F9 installer CD but cannot build a F9 + updates installer CD. The problem appears by merely enabling the additional repo in the stock F9 config files that ship with Revisor. It has also been reported elsewhere: https://fedorahosted.org/genome/ticket/28 The error is Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.8-3 is needed by package glibc-2.8-3.i386 even though the updates.newkey repo clearly has the full set of glibc-* packages at 2.8-8 The OLPC XS installer CD will be installed in many servers that are disconnected or have a horrible internet connection. Additionally, we *need* some of the updates from the updates.newkey repo. So I really need this to work. It looks like a bug to me, but I'm unsure if it's in revisor, anaconda, yum... Hello, gdm was not behaving for me, and given all the dependencies it growed lately it would probably be too heavy on computer with 256M of memory. We're missing activites, but as those make their way into rawhide for F10, we will close these gaps quickly. * A kickstart file that can be used by any Fedora user to generate such an image trivially. This is a new maintainer question. The turtle art activity has a custom license. It appears (although IANAL) to be FOSS friendly. Is the process for packaging to ask the owner to re-licese, or ask fedora-legal to review? -- bk
