new F11-for-XO1 images available for testing
by Daniel Drake
Hi,
I just built 2 images of F11-for-XO1 on OLPC infrastructure according
to my own instructions.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/F11_for_XO-1
The first one is based on the backport that I built and tested before
(a few weeks ago), so it will probably work:
http://dev.laptop.org/~dsd/f11-xo1/os1
and the second one is updated with all of the recent changes that have
been happening in XO-1.5 software development, bringing the 2 trees in
sync at the present time
http://dev.laptop.org/~dsd/f11-xo1/os2
Neither have been tested since the internet connection here in Nepal
is very slow - I will download them over the weekend.
It would be great if anyone is interested in testing during that time
though. I would suggest starting with os2 and falling back on os1 if
it doesn't work.
I'm still looking for people to take on the role of making these
builds on a regular basis - for me, these builds are just a one-off
for now.
The usual cautions apply: this is development code, there will be
bugs. Installation instructions: use copy-nand to install osX.img with
osX.crc.

SoaS v2 Beta Release - "The Next Big Thing"
by Sebastian Dziallas
Hi everybody,
I'm pleased to announce the availability of the Sugar on a Stick v2 Beta
Release. This release includes already a preview of the features in the
upcoming final release, which is due to November 24 right now.
Major updates have been applied and we are now shipping the Fedora 12
Alpha base system as well as the latest Sugar 0.85.3 release.
Additionally, we are now shipping the zyx-liveinstalller by default.
Please download and test your version of this release from here:
http://download.sugarlabs.org/soas/releases/soas-2-beta.iso
6db05c91d2bc1a6c4af1044cea2ae0b6d63931af soas-2-beta.iso
When placing the image on your USB key, please use either
liveusb-creator [1] for Windows or livecd-iso-to-disk [2] for Linux. We
are also providing an appliance image for use with VirtualBox, as well
as VMware, to allow even Mac users to test Sugar on a Stick [3]. Later
in the development cycle, SoaS will also feature specific images the XO.
Finally, please note also that we are going to have a test day on SoaS
with Fedora QA this Thursday. More information will be provided later.
In case you encounter any issues, please report them at our bug tracker:
https://launchpad.net/soas
Thanks,

Powerd feedback
by Gary C Martin
Hi Paul,
Running latest F11-for-XO1 (build 6) here on a couple of XOs here (one
XO-B4 and one XO-1, I have another XO-1 for test but the manufacturer
fat fingered the serial code in OF so it can't be unlocked), and must
say energy saving is working rather well (better than previous XO
released solutions). One unexpected UI behaviour (just considering the
XO-1 here), is that once a machine sleeps, the only way to wake it is
to press and hold the power button:
- wiggling on the touch pad makes the power light turn, on but does
not wake the machine :-(
- pressing keys on the internal keyboard makes the power light turn
on, but does not wake :-(
Pressing and holding the power button works to awaken the machine, but
leaves me with the thoughts:
- if I just tap the button, nothing happens, I have to hold for a
good moment or so
- but if I press the button down for too long, I loose all my work
as the machine will hard shut down
Regards,

Re: [Testing] New F11 for the XO-1 Build 6
by Rafael Enrique Ortiz Guerrero
Thanks for your reply Mitch.
Even thought, i pressed the '√' gamepad button at boot
the system does not pass from loading ramdisk,
can any body build a new F11 on XO .img with the solution propossed
by Mitch ?
wmb: The solution for this is to add "dcon-unfreeze unfreeze" to
/boot/olpc.fth, somewhere before the "boot" line, thus turning off
"pretty boot". Alternatively, if you want to keep pretty boot,
releasing the screen only after all of the text messages have
finished, you can add "echo 0 >/sys/devices/platform/dcon/freeze" to a
late initscript.
or what can i do to workaround this issue ?.

i doubt that's it -- if olpc-powerd is installed and powerd is
running (and yioryos claims it is), then powerd will unfreeze the
screen 10 seconds after it's started.

SoaS3-20090822 impressions
by Mikus Grinbergs
Disclaimer: I am not asking for help; I'm sharing my experiences.
Ran with SoaS3-200908222158.iso (booted from USB stick) on my XO-1.
Slow. The sugar session was liable to vanish at the drop of a hat.
Kudos and congratulations on the use of metacity. Xorg windows for
Linux applications now behave as they should. [In particular,
firefox 3.5.2 runs beautifully, with correct-sized text. So do my
Java applications.]
Something I've mentioned before, which I think is a __BLOCKER__:
For some unknown reason (probably because the root filesystem got to
be 98% full), Sugar put up the "Journal is full" warning -- and I
COULD NOT GET RID of that warning panel, which prevented me from
continuing to use Terminal !!! Ended up going to the text console,
cleaned up some space in the root filesystem, went back to Journal
to delete something there, and only then could I again use Terminal.
PLEASE, show that warning -- but put an (X) button on that warning
panel so the user can (even if temporarily) get it out of his way.
Noticed some flakiness with Sugar palette functions -- I use an USB
mouse, and had to click repeatedly on the self-icon in Home View in
order to show the palette that would take me to 'My Settings'.
Also, there were times when hovering over the icons (e.g., for
running Activities) in the Frame top edge did not show the palette
for that icon (I had wanted to stop that Activity). [Other times,
Frame worked as it should.]
Also noticed the "multiplier effect" in Terminal - click once in the
vertical scroll bar and the screen scrolls many many pages. [This
is an old problem - but some builds show it all the time, other
builds very rarely or not at all.]
Enough for F12 experiences, mikus

Re: F11 for XO1 - Fonts

It's done with xsettings. The property name is Gtk/FontName. All GTK+
apps automatically listen for it (see gdk/x11/gdksettings.c in GTK+
source code as a starting point).
In GNOME, gnome-settings-daemon watches the gconf key for changes and
then generates xsettings/XChangeProperty calls once a change is
detected.
I've now finished the feature page for this:
