BTW, I suspect portaudio can't get to your sound cards because JACK has got them. (That's how it was when I tried this on ubuntu -- though on my system, JACK only grabs one of my sound cards, and so when JACK is running portaudio can get the other one, so I didn't precisely duplicate the problem.
If you stop JACK, does it start working?
