Since perl -i can be a very helpful tool for scripting and system administration, it would be nice if it preserved ACLs and EAs. It corresponds to the KRAT time zone as reported by the date command. The problem is the perl Date::Manip module isn't recognizing this timezone. If you run perldoc Date::Manip and see the list of the zones it understands, you'll see the KRAT zone isn't listed. Eventually, KRAT is equal to CCT (+0800 China Coast, USSR Zone 7) and echoing CCT to /etc/timezone makes the Date::Manip module happy. But until you do so, all the perl scripts that use Date::Manip fail to run, including /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch. However some of these modules do get updated fairly regularly in between perl releases. As a system builder I prefer to update them by building an RPM with cpanflute for the specific module e.g. perl-Time-HiRes, so that I get simple and repeatable installations. But because of the Obsoletes in the perl RPM I have to remember which are in base perl and choose non-standard module names to get round it. If the Obsoletes tag could be made versioned, against the actual module version included in perl, it would simplify the task of keeping systems up to date between Fedora releases. It would also make it it much easier when Fedora perl is updated because $PACKAGE_MANAGER could be trusted not to remove newer modules. This means that rpc.statd is started up before spamd. I'm regularly finding that rpc.statd decides to bind to port 783, which then means spamd is unable to bind to that port and exits with "spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use". This in turn means I get swamped with spam! I'm not sure whether this is primarily an issue with rpc.statd or with spamassassin, but it'd be good to be able to persuade rpc.statd not to steal that port before spamd gets a chance to bind to it. Is this occurring because spamd doesn't have an entry in /etc/services, or would that make no difference? Changing the startup priorities so that spamd starts up before rpc.statd would be a workaround, but it's a hack. There must be a better solution. Using spamassassin-3.1.7-1.fc6 and nfs-utils-1.0.10-4.fc6. perl-DateManip and timezones

Hi, perl-DateManip doesn't use tzdata. This causes bugs like this: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/214709 Which of course will never be 'fixed' by one-off fixes. I've exchanged emails with the maintainer, Sullivan Beck, and while he plans for the next version of Date::Manip to use tzdata, and would like to get to it sometime, he doesn't know when that will be. Personally, while I'd like to work on it, I don't know if I will have the time any time soon, either. So - if anyone has spare time (ha!), this might be a good project to look into.
