Summary: perl -i resets file ACLs and EAs
Product: Fedora Core
Version: fc5
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: normal
Component: perl
AssignedTo: rnorwood(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: josh(a)jbc.edu
QAContact: dkl(a)redhat.com
CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
When perl's -i option is used to do an in-place edit of a file, it resets the
ACLs and extended attributes on that file.
Since perl -i can be a very helpful tool for scripting and system
administration, it would be nice if it preserved ACLs and EAs.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
perl-5.8.8-5
How reproducible:
always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. touch testfile
2. setfacl -m u:testuser:r testfile
3. setfattr -n user.test testfile
4. perl -pi -e 's/Something/SomethingElse/' testfile
5. getfacl testfile; getfattr testfile
Actual results:
Nothing.
Expected results:
ACLs and EAs set in steps 2 and 3 above.

Indeed. perl-Time-Piece-MySQL does not include a Time::Piece
module and therefore must not provide perl(Time::Piece).
Luck has it that a second dependency on Time::Seconds
pulls in perl-Time-Piece. Else it would break.

(note -- the specfile currently uses Build.PL; as perl-Module-Build isn't
available in EPEL yet, it'll probably be necessary to switch over to the
standard Makefile.PL provided.)

Description of problem:
I tried the API on a AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+, I got bad values with some
negative one for the cpuTime of a domain.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
perl-Sys-Virt-0.1.1
How reproducible:
every time
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run a server with some xen domains
2. Try the example included in the package:
/usr/share/doc/perl-Sys-Virt-0.1.1/examples/dump-info.pl
3. Observe the "cpuTime" values
Actual results:
False
Expected results:
Good
Additional info:
I search the sources and I found this value is in fact unsigned long long value
in libvirt library to represent nanoseconds (cf
http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html#virDomainInfo) I didn't try on a
64 bits arch but I think the it could work on it.
I managed to obtain the expected results by patching the sources: I edit Virt.xs
from the source and changed the line 359 from:
hv_store (RETVAL, "cpuTime", 7, newSViv(info.cpuTime), 0);
to
hv_store (RETVAL, "cpuTime", 7, newSVnv(info.cpuTime), 0);
So the unsigned long long is read as a float scalar and not an integer scalar.

Summary: readline function in perl does not correctly set $!
Product: Fedora Core
Version: fc6
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: normal
Component: perl
AssignedTo: rnorwood(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: wpilorz(a)gmail.com
QAContact: dkl(a)redhat.com
CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
perldoc -f readline
displays example code how do check for errors with readline:
for (;;) {
undef $!;
unless (defined( $line = <> )) {
die $! if $!;
last; # reached EOF
}
# ...
}
Unfortunately this method no longer works as described in current perl version.
I am including a short perl script readline_test.pl attempting to use that
method and bash script readline_test.bash calling that perl script 16 times;
input is either "1234" or "1234\n",
PERLIO environment variable is set to perlio or stdio,
(PERLIO=perlio is equivalent to PERLIO not set in FC6)
$/ is set to undef, not modified, \2, \1024.
$/ is set to a reference to value specified in environment variable CHUNKSIZE,
unless it is 0 ($/ not set in this case) or negative ($/ set to undef).
In correct perl implementation all 16 tests should run successfully (no die).
The results included show that PERLIO=stdio is better (4 tests fail for stdio, 6
tests fail for perlio)
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
perl-5.8.8-10
How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. save readline_test.pl and readline_test.bash files from attachemnts into

2. run the following command in the current directory
bash readline_test.bash
you could prefer to run
bash -vx readline_test.bash

Expected results:
each run of perl should complete without die and show number of bytes on input
(4 for first 8 tests, 5 for remaining tests)
Additional info:
if PERLIO=perlio is used and there is actual I/O error in data file, the
readline_test.pl dies with inappropriate error message
'Bad file descriptor' rather than 'Input/output error'
im most cases.
This can be easily shown with truncated ISO-9660 image file, loop mounted.
Should I also include test cases for this?

Summary: cpan2rpm doesn't work with latest Pod::Text
Product: Fedora
Version: f7
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: low

Component: cpan2rpm
AssignedTo: ghenry(a)suretecsystems.com
ReportedBy: roland(a)astrofoto.org

CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
The latest version of Pod::Text from CPAN is from RRA/podlators-2.0.5.tar.gz
Pod::Text no longer derives from Pod::Parser so the method 'interpolate' does
not exist. As near as I can tell, this is the only method used in cpan2rpm, so
Pod::Text can be changed to Pod::Parser in the two places it appears. This is
what I did locally and it now works for me.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
cpan2rpm-2.028-2.fc6
How reproducible:
update Pod::Text via cpan.
Run cpan2rpm for some module (any will do...)
Actual results:

Can't locate object method "interpolate" via package "Pod::Text" at

Hey all --
I put some additional work into the CPAN->Fedora mapping tools over
Thanksgiving break...
* version info is now pulled from koji
* version in testing, if available, is published
* versions pre F-7 are not pulled (working to fix this)
* data is now stored in a backend db
* upstream-querying is now modular, so querying other upstreams (e.g.
for non-perl) should just be a matter of writing the correct backend
extension and providing a way to determine it should be used against a
package.
The page is still up out at http://fedora.biggerontheinside.net/perl/.
Note I consider the page a stop-gap; next time I get some cycles I'll
probably give Catalyst a whirl and see if I can't make something nice
and dynamic to present it :) Note also there are CSS issues; I've
asked the infrastructure list to set me right. I'm also looking to
leverage a greater integration with koji and the packagedb as
opportunities present themselves.
The code is out under the camelus hosted project[1] It's still early,
mildly slap-dash and requires a bunch of modules not yet available in
Fedora (a number of MooseX ones and DBIx::Class spring to mind).
Patches / comments / collaboration quite welcome :)

removing the perl.ppc64 still left the 64 bit binary).

This appears to be the only difference in version 3.1.7. Notice that the 32bit
version retained the original source timestamp, while the 64bit version somehow
decided to differ in this behavior by changing the timestamp to the build date.
The above example is 3.1.7 built on RHEL4, but this persists through perl-5.8.8
in FC7 too.
While this appears to create a multilib conflict, in practice this is not a real
problem because spamassassin is based on perl, and we don't ship both archs in a
multilib distribution.
This bug is merely to figure out *why* it is behaving in this strange way
betweeen 32bit and 64bit builds.

As there is a standartized cron script now to utilize sa-update, please allow
pass arguments to this command. Use /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin to set
$SAUPDATEOPT, and use this in /usr/share/spamassassin/sa-update.cron:
[...]
if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin ]; then
. /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin
fi
/usr/bin/sa-update $SAUPDATEOPT
These argument are necessary to be able to alter sa-update default behaviour.
Also I dislike output (echo commands with mailing to root by cron daemon) in
this file even there is no (error) output. Please remove it along with tee
commad and redirection of output in the file /etc/cron.d/sa-update. Unix-like
style is to report nothing when there is no error.
There is also a possibility to add -D (--debug [area=n,...]) argument to the
sa-update to get output mailed if one need it.
Thank you.

Description of problem:
I have set up my timezone as "Asia/Krasnoyarsk" when installing FC6. It corresponds to the KRAT time zone as reported by the date command.
The problem is the perl Date::Manip module isn't recognizing this timezone. If you run perldoc Date::Manip and see the list of the zones it understands, you'll see the KRAT zone isn't listed. Eventually, KRAT is equal to CCT (+0800 China Coast, USSR Zone 7) and echoing CCT to /etc/timezone makes the Date::Manip module happy. But until you do so, all the perl scripts that use Date::Manip fail to run, including /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.

Summary: RFE: Versioned Obsoletes for built-in perl modules

Component: perl
AssignedTo: rnorwood(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: nj(a)leverton.org
QAContact: dkl(a)redhat.com
CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
The perl rpm Obsoletes a number of modules which are now included in base perl
5.8.8. However some of these modules do get updated fairly regularly in
between perl releases.
As a system
builder I prefer to update them by building an RPM with cpanflute for the
specific module e.g. perl-Time-HiRes, so that I get simple and repeatable
installations. But because of the Obsoletes in the perl RPM I have to remember
which are in base perl and choose non-standard module names to get round it.
If the Obsoletes tag could be made versioned, against the actual module
version included in perl, it would simplify the task of keeping systems up to
date between Fedora releases. It would also make it it much easier when
Fedora perl is updated because $PACKAGE_MANAGER could be trusted not to remove
newer modules.
At the time of writing the tags for perl 5.8.8 would be:
Obsoletes: perl-Digest-MD5 <= 2.36
Obsoletes: perl-MIME-Base64 <= 3.07
Obsoletes: perl-libnet <= 1.19
Obsoletes: perl-Storable <= 2.15
Obsoletes: perl-CGI <= 3.15
Obsoletes: perl-CPAN <= 1.7602
Obsoletes: perl-DB_File <= 1.814
Obsoletes: perl-Filter <= 1.32

Summary: use of study() with utf8 support enabled breaks regexps
Product: Fedora Core
Version: devel
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: normal
Component: perl
AssignedTo: jvdias(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: jvdias(a)redhat.com
QAContact: dkl(a)redhat.com
CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
Use of study() with utf8 support enabled breaks perl-5.8.7's
regular expressions :
OK without UTF:
$ echo 'ABDCEFGHIJK' |
perl -pe 'study; s/HIJK/1234/;'
ABDCEFG1234
$ echo 'ABCDEFGHIJK' |
perl -e '$_=<>; study; print /HIJK/,"\n";'
1
FAILS with UTF:
$ echo 'ABDCEFGHIJK' |
PERL_UNICODE=31 perl -pe 'study; s/HIJK/1234/;'
ABDCEFGHIJK
$ echo 'ABCDEFGHIJK' |
PERL_UNICODE=31 perl -e '$_=<>; study; print /HIJK/,"\n";'
(re did not match)
Seems to be study() that is the culprit:
$ echo 'ABDCEFGHIJK' |
PERL_UNICODE=31 perl -pe 's/HIJK/1234/;'
ABDCEFG1234
And it is because $_ gets utf8-ness from STDIN:
$ echo 'ABDCEFGHIJK' |
PERL_UNICODE=63 perl -e '$_=<>; study; print /HIJK/ ? "OK" : "FAIL","\n";'
FAIL
$ PERL_UNICODE=63 perl -e '$_="ABDCEFGHIJK"; study; print /HIJK/ ? "OK" :
"FAIL","\n";'
OK
This was in the 'en_US.UTF-8' locale. If I make utf-8 support
conditional on locale, the problem goes away for the C locale:
$ echo 'ABDCEFGHIJK' |
PERL_UNICODE=127 LC_ALL=C perl -e '$_=<>; study; print /HIJK/ ? "OK" :
"FAIL","\n";'
OK

Summary: LibXML failing under mod_perl (missing initialization
code in .xs)
Product: Fedora Core
Version: fc6
Platform: All

Status: NEW
Severity: high
Priority: normal
Component: perl-XML-LibXML
AssignedTo: rnorwood(a)redhat.com

CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
perl-XML-LibXML-1.58-2.2.2.1
How reproducible:
Easily.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. run following program under mod_perl or SpeedyCGI or any similar persistent
perl interpreter (not /usr/bin/perl, as it is not persistent):
use XML::Simple;
XMLin('/path/to/any/valid/xml/file.xml') && print "OK"
Actual results:
first run prints "OK", second run dies with message:
Couldn't create file parser context for file "/path/to/any/valid/xml/file.xml":
No such file or directory at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/XML/LibXML.pm line 427.
Expected results:
"OK"
Additional info:
This bug is already documented in Debian's bug-tracking system, please look
there: http://bugs.donarmstrong.com/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=240334
Basicaly, there is missing one initialization block in LibXML library for perl,
which causes it to work correctly when running under non-persistent Perl
interpreter, but fails under persistent Perl (eg. mod_perl, etc.).
I assigned it a "high" level priority, because this bug effectively disables all
functionality of mod_perl modules which are using LibXML, and it is impossible
to get around this bug :(((.

Along these lines... Do we have a plan for including 5.10 in
F-9/devel? With the RC out, it sounds like 5.10 will GA
not-too-horribly-soon from now, and we're at a point in devel where
it's probably the Right Time to think about bumping from 5.8 to 5.10.

They're probably quiet about it because they prefer coding over talking :-)
Perl 5.10-RC1 has been unleashed recently[1], full of nice new
features[2], borrowing some from (the still-vaporware) Perl6 (named
capture buffers!).

Hi,
According to CPAN this File::NCopy is deprecated.
c.f. http://search.cpan.org/~chorny/File-NCopy-0.36
Q1: Is anybody using File::NCopy?
Q2: How to retire it?
Unless somebody speaks up or an existing use-case can be found in Fedora
(I checked the repos but couldn't find one), I'd like to remove it from
rawhide, but to continue shipping it for already released distros.
Ralf

longer present in our current OS release, or that there is no longer any
interest in tracking the problem.
Setting status to "INSUFFICIENT_DATA", however if you still experience this

Red Hat tracking the issue, and assisting in troubleshooting the problem, please

Hi,
The issue of .h files in a non-devel RPM rears its head again. In the
package review for perl-DBI, my package reviewer points out rpmlint
warnings about .h files in a non-devel package. So, the question is, is
it worth it? Technical rpm correctness, or the blessed silence of
people not yelling about having to change their BR's? Of course, in
this case it's a much more limited set of packages to change.

R gives us a number of perl provides:
perl(File::Copy::Recursive) = 0.31
perl(Text::DelimMatch) = 1.01
This, understandably, confuses apt/yum:
Package perl(File::Copy::Recursive) is a virtual package provided by:
perl-File-Copy-Recursive 0.35-1.fc7
R 2.6.0-1.fc7
R.32bit 2.6.0-1.fc7
You should explicitly select one to install.
Given that these modules are installed by R, but to non-standard directories,
I'm of the opinion they should be filtered. (Especially when
perl-File-Copy-Recursive works just fine for me :))
