Chris, I admit this should be taken upstream.

Shall I file this enhancement request upstream with the comment that I oopose
the idea, but I need their support so that my users stop reopening the bug?

Wouldn't it be less confusing for upstream if some of the supporters of the
idea would file the enhancement request instead?
