Summary: add compiz installation instructions back to Desktop

Product: Fedora Documentation

ReportedBy: kwade(a)redhat.com

CC: jkeating@redhat.com,kwade@redhat.com,sundaram@redhat.com
Currently, the compiz package needs to be installed. The instruction was
mistakenly removed from the Docs/Beats/Desktop page. Fortunately, the string is
untranslateable (being a command), so perhaps we can slip it back in to Desktop.xml:
<listitem>
<para>
<command>su -c 'yum install compiz'</command>
</para>
</listitem>
However, the package may get added in for default:
<f13> mether: we may add compiz by default in the gnome group. Trying to get an
ack from the gnome folks.
Cc:ing all the folks here to let us know what happens with that; set to block
the FC6 notes so's not to get forgotten.

Release notes from
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc5/release-notes-ISO/#id3092710
Section 8.6 Preparing for Kernel Development
tell me:
Prepare the kernel sources using the commands:
cd ~/rpmbuild/SPECS
rpmbuild -bp --target $(uname -m) kernel-2.6.spec
The kernel source tree is located in the
${HOME}/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-<version>/ directory.
This is not correct for FC5; when following the procedure the directory
.../BUILD/kernel-<version>/ contains:
# ls -p rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-2.6.17/
Config.mk linux-2.6.17.i686/ vanilla/ xen/ xen-20060708/
So I assume the kernel "sources" of a version I want to build myself are in one
these subdirectories, but this is different from the current wording of the
release notes.
The box a few lines above "Do Not Build Packages as Super-user" has the
directory (almost) correct:
~/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-<version>/linux-<version>

ReportedBy: nag(a)uk.ibm.com
QAContact: kwade(a)redhat.com
CC: kwade(a)redhat.com
The release notes stats that IBM pSeries machines, which has the POWER5
processors, are supported - great.
pSeries machines can be used in three ways:
1) Stand alone as a SMP machine.
2) Using Logical Partitions with physical resources like real SCSI disks and
Ethernet.
3) Using Logical Partitions with virtual resources like using ibmvscsi and
ibmveth drivers.
It is not clear in the release notes which modes are supported.
I have just tried virtual resources - failed with unable to read package
metadata, failure with a reference to repodata/comps.xml from anaconda Errno 256
I have just tried with physical resources - hangs loading a DAC960 driver, which
is a RAID SCSI card.
If you clarify which modes and hardware Fedora5 has been tested on, we might
avoid many frustrations in Fedora users.

I noticed that in the release notes a URL to a bugzilla page is obfuscated with
tinyurl. Imho it would be better to use a page on the wiki, that redirects users
to the bugzilla page. I created an example page at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/TillMaas/ForwardTest
You can see the used code, here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/TillMaas/ForwardTest?action=edit&editor=text
So if you like this idea, you only need to use above code on a well selected
page in the wiki, e.g.

ReportedBy: allenhalsey(a)gmail.com
QAContact: kwade(a)redhat.com
Fedora 7 relase notes section 16.4. on CD and DVD Authoring and Burning states:
"GNOME users can burn directly from the Nautilus file manager, choose the
gnomebaker or graveman packages, or utilize the older xcdroast package from
Fedora. KDE users can use the robust k3b package for these tasks."
This incorrectly implies that you need to be a KDE user to use k3b, when, in
fact, k3b is popular with many Gnome users. Similarly, GTK-based applications,
like graveman, can be run within the KDE environment.
It is not necessary to make a KDE versus Gnome distinction when selecting
applications. Interoperability between the various X Window System desktop
applications is primary goal of the freedesktop project.

Anaconda needs a "filler" HTML page for release notes. If we can't get the
one-sheet into fedora-release-notes in a timely basis, let's at least have a
small note here that redirects people to the one-sheet canonical page (currently
the wiki) for information.

- * Support for KVM virtualization.
-
- * Tickless support for x86 32bit, which greatly improves power management.
+ * Tickless support for x86 64bit systems (32 bit was added previously), which greatly improves power management.
-
- * The devicescape wireless network stack, which includes support for several new wireless drivers.
-
- * New IDE drivers that use the same libata code as the SATA drivers.
- [[Admonition("note","IDE Device Names Changed","The new IDE drivers now cause all IDE drives to have device names like /dev/sdX instead of /dev/hdX. If the /etc/fstab or /etc/crypttab files reference these devices by name, they must be migrated before the system can access those partitions.")]]
-
- * Support for version 2 of the Global File System (GFS2) has been integrated into the upstream kernel.

Bug 236162: Review Request: kadischi - Fedora based LiveCD/LiveDVD creation
utility
Product: Fedora
Version: devel
Component: Package Review
Chitlesh GOORAH <cgoorah(a)yahoo.com.au> has cancelled John Mahowald
<jpmahowald(a)gmail.com>'s request for fedora_requires_release_note:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=236162
------- Additional Comments from Chitlesh GOORAH <cgoorah(a)yahoo.com.au>
Well, sounds like Jasper is no more interested in kadischi.
I'll say, I'll close this bug as WONTFIX on 6 July 2007 (in 2 days) if Jasper
doesn't reply.
I don't like sponsoring someone who vanishes out of the blue !

Summary: Docs/Beats/Installer mentions "Disc 1" for memtest
Product: Fedora Documentation
Version: devel
Platform: All
URL: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/Installer
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: urgent
Priority: urgent
Component: release-notes
AssignedTo: relnotes(a)fedoraproject.org
ReportedBy: opensource(a)till.name
QAContact: kwade(a)redhat.com
In http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/Installer there is written:
[[Admonition("note", "Memtest86 Availability", "You must boot from Installation
Disc 1, the DVD, or a rescue CD in order to use this feature.")]]
But there is no official "Disc 1" anymore, only a DVD image, a rescue CD image
and live cd images, but I do not know, whether or not the live cd images
provide memtest86, too.
