Hi,
I commited a few hours ago [1] the last change for relicensing shomyu
to the GNU Affero General Public Licenve version 3 and later [2].
This closes the ticket #21 [3]. However, for being totally safe on the
legal side, ticket #20 [4] still has to be closed, which I intend to
have done before next week-end.
I chose to relicense shomyu to the AGPLv3+ as this is a license
particularly adapted for web applications. It basically is the same as
the GPLv3+, with only one difference:
- with the GPLv3, if someone modifies shomyu and then runs it on a web
server, providing a service to users over the Internet, he doesn't
have to redistribute his changes under the same license (running a web
application on a server is not considered « distribution »).
- with the AGPLv3, if someone does the same, he will *have to*
redistribute his changes under the same license (running a web
application on a server is then considered « distribution » to the
users of the software).
The goal of this is to prevent a proprietary service to use shomyu,
modify it to make it more suitable for its customers, but not
redistribute the changes to us. Hopefully, this license will lead to
better collaboration between FOSS web developers and Internet
companies.
One thing to note is that the AGPLv3+ requires to have a link to the
source code on a web application released under it. I added an icon on
the map for this purpose [5]. I tried to make it as unobtrusive as
possible. What do you think ?
Regards,
