Despite a posting to the lists earlier in the month[1] to check our spin content, apparently no one caught the fact that there was no Moblin spin among the release candidates. At this point, we're going to have to wait for mirrors to die down before we can consider shipping a late copy. I went to the Spins process page[2] to see where things might have gone off track, and found that the page stated that after acceptance the following step occurs: "Spin added to a wiki page containing a table listing all of the spins for Fedora X (very similar to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/11/FeatureList)" Note that no one is responsible or accountable for it happening according to the spin page, nor is the proper page listed. I made a change, so now the step reads: "The Spins Wrangler adds the Spin to a wiki page containing a table listing all of the spins for Fedora 14 (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/14/Spins)" This change is not a decree by any means, but it seemed like the most effective way to ensure entries get made. I can't help but think we would have caught this problem if there were regular Spins meetings, or at least schedule items that indicate the SIG should carry out a task like checking the list of Spins before RC phase. Earlier, I brought up the idea of entering a set of schedule items. Ideally, someone on the SIG will step up to gather that list of dates for Fedora 14, and talk to John Poelstra to make sure the dates get on the release schedule. I'd also like to make sure we have a clear spins wrangler who knows the responsibilities that come with that role. That person should check over the spins process page[2] and find any places where it's not clear what the task is, and who is responsible for doing it. Moblin to Meego for F14?

Is the Moblin spin going to get renamed for F14? If so we'll need to do another trademark check with the board. Also the wiki page for the new name should get created. Spins are supposed to be submitted by next week, so this change should happen soon if it is going to happen for F14.

Change ntp sync servers in Spin BrOffice.org

Hello, One person of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee talked with me on event, because they have a new Stratum1 ntp servers and he spoken with all distributions with local versions to use them. I like this idea because is more quickly synchronize with one ntp server here in Brazil then one outside our country and i believe this will useful for our users. One friend and I developed a way to do that with a post command in the Kickstart file, but in a talk with the another maintainer of Spin BrOffice.org, he told me than we can have problems with Spin Guidelines. Review request for --skipcopy patches

I have attached two patches from bug 582051 that are intended to make --skipcopy more useful for testing. One is for functionallity, the other expands the documentation of what skipcopy skips a bit better. As discussed in the bug report I don't like: +if [ -s $USBMNT/$LIVEOS/$OVERFILE ]; then and think that it should be: +if [ "$overlaysizemb" -gt 0 ]; then This is easier to understand and seems more likely to be correct. I am not sure if my comment about my suggestion was misunderstood, but I don't see why my suggestion wouldn't work and the one provided would. But maybe there is something subtle going on. Since --skipcopy is for testing I don't think the patch will have much impact on normal use. So I would be inclined to except this patch if modified as I suggest, but I'd like to get more feedback.

The syslinux dependency is expected to be fixed the GA release, so this isn't going to be needed to keep perl out of the livecd-desktop spin. Live Desktop ks issue

I believe the policy for ks files precludes removing packages in post that were brought in from the packgroups. Since F13 the livecd-desktop ks gained: yum -C -y remove perl perl-libs perl-version perl-Crypt-PasswdMD5 perl-Pod-Escapes perl-Module-Pluggable perl-Digest-SHA1 perl-Pod-Simple syslinux I think that is going to need to be reverted. I think that will break other ks files that include live-desktop that expect some of those packages to be there. I think there is qork being done to revome the perl dependency for syslinux that might make this unnecessary. Does anyone want to explain what's going on here? We can talk about this on list, but I'm going to add it to the agenda for the Monday meeting as well.

Spins in Ready for SIG state

I put all (not counting some ks only locale varients) spins into ready for SIG state after reviewing differences since F13. (Eventually we need to do deeper reviews.) MeeGo is the only one that I think needs any discussion, the rest should be pretty much just approved since there aren't any significant changes. For MeeGo it went out with experimental video drivers enabled, which wasn't supposed to happen and I like to see that removed now if it isn't still needed, to make the slip less likely for F14. Also I am not sure that the trademark issue is resolved. Paul asked on the advisory board list, and no other board members said yeah or nay if they thought the board needed to reapprove the trademark. (I'd be inclined to say that the lack comment suggests that reapproval by the full board isn't needed, but we can discuss that Monday.) As mentioned previously the livecd-desktop ks has an issue, but that isn't a spin we actually approve for release so doesn't need a vote. But we do need to get that ks fixed as it could potentially break other things.

I went through the spin pages for the spins from F13/F14 and made sure they had a link to the F13 version of the page, that the ks links now pointed to the master (note HEAD is not guaranteed to be master) branch and that they are all marked ready for wrangler. I'll have at least some in ready for spins state for Monday's meeting. Most likely there aren't a lot of changes and it will be easy to report to spins what's changed and we can get through approvals for most or all of them on Monday.

There will be a testing requirement for the GA release

The details haven't been worked out yet, but as a heads up there will be a testing requirement for spins for the General Availability release that will need to be done by spin owners or their delegates. Failure to do so will result in a spin being dropped. People can give some preliminary feedback here or at our regular spins meetings. I removed member list on wiki page

The member list on the Spins SIG wiki page didn't really reflect the active membership of the spins group. At this time having the list there didn't seem to be of much benefit. People should use the mailing list or attend meetings to reach members. Releng needs to know who to work with for releases (the Wrangler). If the team starts becoming more functional in the future, it might make sense to list some people that might be useful to contact individually.

releng meeting delayed

Jesse couldn't make the scheduled releng meeting today, so the discussion on how spins SIG (in particular the wrangler) is going to work with releng for the GA release has been postponed. P.S. I wrote myself in as interim wrangler, since I would like to see a better handling of this than in the past and having no wrangler isn't really an option unless we plan on dropping spins. I am still hoping someone else will volunteer for this. On the plus side this will help me document what the wrangler does.

I think a few of the one-line descriptions on http://spins.fedoraproject.org/ could be tweaked to provide a clearer description of the spin, and I'm wondering if the list feels the same way. Here's ones that I like: KDE - A complete, modern desktop built using the K Desktop Environment (KDE). LXDE - A light, fast, less-resource hungry desktop environment. Games - A perfect show-case of the best games available in Fedora. XFCE - A complete, well-integrated Xfce desktop. BrOffice - Brazilian localized spin that provides the legal brand for OpenOffice.org in Brazil. FEL - Fedora's high-end hardware design and simulation platform. Here's ones that leave me wanting more: Security - Security analysis tools. SoaS - Discover. Reflect. Share. Learn. Moblin -The future of the mobile internet. Design - Open Creativity. I wrote up some suggestions to provide some food for thought. Lots of these are based on the extended descriptions. I included the current one-liners for reference purposes: SoaS - Discover. Reflect. Design - Fedora custom-made for the creative user. The originals for these spins seem a bit too vague for me. Some of my suggestions also seem to be that way, too, but I think they could be tweaked to reveal more of what they are. Security - Security analysis tools. Security - A security toolkit. Security - A Swiss army knife for all things security. After writing some of these, the security one might be better than the ones I wrote. The name of the spin suggests to me that it's a hardened version of Fedora, so I think the one-liner should make it clear that it's meant as a toolkit as well as being secure. I think my main concern with it is that it's rather short. BrOffice's one-liner is one that I'm not sure about since I'm not sure what the legal brand of OpenOffice is. That might be because I'm not from Brazil ;) Could this be clarified as well? ;) I have a personal preference for ones that have a good balance of flair and information. I also like ones that complete the sentence "This is a spin that provides ... " in an interesting, but specific, way. What do you guys think? Hello Aaron. As a now co-maintainer of the Fedora Design Suite, I felt it was partially my responsibility to comment on the following: Design - Open Creativity. It is a bit vague, I completely agree. And it really doesn't do anything to stimulate the brain and leave you wanting to know more information. My comments below for each: Design - A suite brimming with multimedia production and publishing tools. - Definitely no. Design - Multimedia production and publishing tools. - Getting better but not specific enough. Perhaps something more like Design Suite - Multimedia design and production tools. - I'm still not convinced at that, but it needs to be more precise I reckon. Design - Fedora custom-made for the creative user. - Again, definitely no. It explains absolutely nothing. Well done Aaron for bringing this to our attention though. And I do agree with you. There is more than one that need a little more thought and creativity put into it.
