Phillip Lougher posted a patch set for lzma + squashfs this morning on lkml. So it seems very likely that 2.6.33 will get this feature and that it would be possible for it to be in F13.

Today Lougher posted some info indicating there is a devel branch of squashfs-tools that supports lzma compression. Having livecd-creator use lzma compression shouldn't be too difficult. There are some questions about how it might use it. (e.g. optional or always, what about building images with older kernels, etc.)
I started pestering people to let me do stuff. I'd like to take a shot at building a rawhide squashfs-tools using the devel version and supplying some patches to livecd-creator to make this work. Hopefully to have something testable before the feature freeze. Hopefully enough in advance to let spin owners consider taking advantage of extra space that may be provided.
My feeling is that this isn't really a feature, but since it impacts the spins I think we need a good idea on whether or not it will work acceptably pretty early on.

After talking to FESCO I wrote up a feature proposal page for this. It might still end up not being deemed a feature though. I won't ask for a vote until I see that Lougher's patch have been accepted.
I'll be working on testing the devel version of squashfs-tools this weekend.
The tentative feature page for this is at: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/LZMA_for_Live_Images

Realistically I can't see making an F13 target for this. It wouldn't be testable by alpha, and changing the spins to use lzma after that seems like a bad idea. I'll wait another week before officially changing the feture page to target f14. But unless the squashfs / lzma library compatibility is fixed by next week, I don't think it is worth asking for feature approval with an f13 target.
I will continue to work on getting squashfs-tools to support lzma in rawhide and track the lmza/squashfs kernel packages (currently in linux-next for 2.6.34) and maybe ask for a backport to 2.6.33 in Fedora if it will help with testing.
I'll do some testing using a private copy of livecd-tools during the f13 development period but won't try to get changes into f13. (Assuming the likely event of the proposed feature being postponed to f14.)
