Hi,
I've just uploaded an SSSD package to the FreeIPA team PPA [1] to be tested on Ubuntu Karmic. It builds a snapshot from the git master tree (via the bzr import of master [2]). The specific Debian packaging is available from another bzr branch [3].
[1]: https://launchpad.net/~freeipa/+archive/ppa [2]: https://code.launchpad.net/~vcs-imports/sssd/trunk [3]: https://code.launchpad.net/~mathiaz/sssd/ubuntu-pkg
My plan is still to try to get 0.5.0 in Karmic. The deadline (FeatureFreeze) is Thu, August 27th.
I'll try to do an upload on a daily basis to make sure master keeps building on Karmic. And I think that the Debian packaging is ready. Next step is to get more testing done on the sssd packages available from the FreeIPA PPA.

That's great news! We'd love for the SSSD to get more exposure.

We currently have a targeted release date of August 24th for the SSSD 0.5.0 (specifically to make your August 27th feature freeze). How hard is that date (if we discovered a last-minute blocking issue, for instance)?

That would certainly be helpful. If master breaks on Ubuntu at any point, open a blocker bug at https://fedorahosted.org/sssd/newticket and I will deal with it immediately.

A package needs to be uploaded by this date. Once we're in Feature Freeze the focus is on fixing bugs. If I have an upstream tarball I can build a package from I can upload it to the archive.
One option would be to release an 0.5.0 RC tarball when master is frozen. I could then upload 0.5.0 RC to karmic before Feature Freeze. If only bug fixes are supposed to get in master once it is frozen, the final version of 0.5.0 could be uploaded after Feature Freeze as it would only include bug fixes (and no new features).

I've filed ticket 110 since the current master fails to build on Ubuntu Karmic. Is filing a new ticket enough to get it on your radar?

Absolutely. I see every ticket that arrives. Also, I've already fixed it :)
Filing a bug on Trac is the second-fastest way to get a bug resolved (after pointing a gun to my head, but I really prefer the ticket method).
