please check the entry for subject_principal in man sss-certmap. A
typical example for AD would be
(|(userPrincipalName={subject_principal})(samAccountName={subject_principal.short_name}))
But since you said that you see a certificate selection I guess the
mapping rule might be already ok.
Please check krb5_child.log, after setting 'debug_level=9' in the
[domain/...] section if there are some Kerberos related issues.
Typically you have to set 'pkinit_eku_checking=none' and suitable
'pkinit_kdc_hostname' in /etc/krb5.conf.
