Yes, I use "net ads join".
I can use shorter name in smb.conf, but that means you have to also use custom conf file
for sssd, nfs,... rest of Kerberized services which guess machine credentials using the
hostname.
I would like to avoid this hassle.

Which tool do you use to join, realmd or 'net ads'? iirc samba typically
just cuts the hostname after 15 characters and use the result as the
NetBIOS name if no 'netbios name' is specified in /etc/samba/smb.conf.
But depending on you naming scheme this might lead to conflicts.
