Sway Spin

[Mike Harter]

Hi All,

I have been using sway on fedora and I like the setup quite a bit. I was
wondering if I could contribute by helping create a fedora spin for sway. I
am not sure what all would be involved.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi Mike,
there is now an i3 spin of Fedora [1], so you can start by looking at that.
Making the spin official would be a bit longer process, but AFAIK good
start would be preparing a kickstart file.
There will be further questions about what to actually include etc.,
but this could get you started

This is actually the hardest part of the whole process: selecting the "right"
applications to include, so that you can provide a polished user
experience with sensible defaults.

In case you want to take a look at the technical details, you'll find
the kickstarts for the i3 spin on pagure [1] and the instructions how to
build the isos locally on the docs page [2].

I'd also like to mention that the i3 SIG keeps getting the question "Why
not sway?" pretty frequently, thus I assume that there is definitely a
demand for a sway spin. If you can find enough interested contributors,
then it would be certainly possible to create a sway spin and build upon
the bits and pieces that the i3 SIG learned (and collaborate as much as
possible).

Thanks for your help with a starting point. I have begun looking at the
kickstart files to try to figure out what I am looking at and thinking
about how I would change them for sway.

Do you guys have a recommendation for a login manager? Would we want one
with wayland support or is it fine to rely on X for compatibility?

greetd [0] is a nice login manager daemon that works well for minimal 
setups, written in Rust.

Alternatively, there's Ly [1], which has a textual interface and seems 
fairly popular.

Manager on TTY" written in Go.

None of the above options is currently packaged for Fedora. All three 
have example config files to integrate with Systemd.


Personally, my current login manager is just the stock `login(1)` 
program to open my default shell before unlocking my keys with gpg-agent 
and running `ssh-agent sway`. I understand that this setup is probably 
not ideal for a spin, but I just threw it out there to illustrate how 
the choice of login manager is relatively low on the list of things 
worth losing sleep over.

Thanks all for your input. I have a start for the kickstart files but there
is still something that I am missing. When I run:

livemedia-creator --make-iso --ks sway-flat.ks --no-virt --iso-only
>  --iso-name sway.iso

It seems to work up unill it hangs at "Configuring installed system". Since
I am new at this I am pretty lost for how to debug this. Can someone take a
look and give me some pointers?

I made an attempt to write group definitions for sway based on my setup:

That's hardly a satisfactory set for any user or SIG member, but at 
least we can start from here.

My vote goes to the sddm. It's the most sane option even while it's 
X11-only, and the wayland support work was recently picked up.
  Hopefully we'll see it in 0.20.


Other options (via `dnf repoquery --whatprovides 
'service(graphical-login)'`):

  - gdm - supports wayland, but has a hard dependency on the whole GNOME 
(gnome-shell + gnome-session). Unable to load environment from 
.profile/.bashrc/.zshrc/... by design.

  - kdm - part of KDE4 legacy package.
..
  - lightdm - no active development, was broken last time I tried (does 
not hand over all the input devices to a wayland session).
  Supports wayland and reportedly can use wayland greeter if somebody 
writes one.
  - lxdm - seems dead upstream
  - slim - dead upstream since 2013



There's also greetd, which is nice but too minimalistic and opinionated. 
Needs at least XDG_SESSION_TYPE support before considering it as a 
default option.
