Hi Phillip,
There was a thread about that back in May[1] and Mike Harter published
kickstarts[2] for building the spin image.
I will have a go at using those . .
There's also an option to start from minimal (netinstall) image,
add
group definitions and install only the environment you need. I tested
that on some of my devices with this repo with groups:

I will test that option out on my old Zenbook . .
There's no technical blockers for creating a spin. Well,
selecting the
software and making sure that everything works nicely out of the box
is hard, but definitely doable. And i3 SIG already offered to help and
share their experience.

I am prob not clued-up enough for that but would love to participate . .
