Call for Test Days for Fedora 18

Hey, folks. It's that time again - time to start thinking about Test Days for Fedora 18. For anyone who isn't aware, a Test Day is an event usually focused around IRC for interaction and a Wiki page for instructions and results, with the aim being to get a bunch of interested users and developers together to test a specific feature or area of the distribution. You can run a Test Day on just about anything for which it would be useful to do some fairly focused testing in 'real time' with a group of testers; it doesn't have to be code, for instance we often run Test Days for l10n/i18n topics. For more information on Test Days, see https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days . Anyone who wants to can host their own Test Day, or you can request that the QA group helps you out with organization, or any combination of the two. To propose a Test Day, just file a ticket in QA trac - full details are at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/Create . For instructions on hosting a Test Day, see https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/SOP_Test_Day_management . You can see the schedule at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Fedora_18_test_days . There are many slots open right now, with the earliest on 2012-08-09 and the latest 2012-11-01. Consider the development schedule, though, in deciding when you want to run your Test Day - for some topics you may want to avoid the time before the Alpha release or the time after the feature freeze or the Final freeze. We normally aim to schedule Test Days on Thursdays; however, if you want to run a series of related Test Days, it's often a good idea to do something like Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday of the same week (this is how we usually run the X Test Week, for instance). If all the Thursday slots fill up but more people want to run Test Days, we will open up Tuesday slots as overflows. And finally, if you really want to run a Test Day in a specific timeframe due to the development schedule, but the Thursday slot for that week is full, we can add a slot on another day. We're flexible! Just put in your ticket the date or timeframe you'd like, and we'll figure it out from there. Fedora 18 Virt Test Day is this Thurs Nov 1!

Hey all, The Fedora 18 Virt Test Day is this Thursday, November 1st. That's two days away! The test day landing page is here (still being expanded): https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2012-11-01_Virtualization If you're interested in trying out some new virt functionality, we've got step by step instructions for: * Using snapshots to backup disk images of a live VM with no VM downtime * Assigning a physical USB3 device to your VM * Assign a local USB device to your VM, even if the VM is on a remote machine! * Setting disk IO bandwidth limits on your VM * Suspend and Hibernate your VMs * Enabling the PV EOI performance optimization for your VMs * Using kernel syscall filters (seccomp) to further secure your host against VM exploits (currently busted but we are working on a fix) Of course, maybe you don't care about new features. We still need you! The test day is the perfect time to make sure your virt workflow is working fine on Fedora 18, as there will be several developers on hand to answer any questions, help with debugging, provide patches, etc. No requirement to run through test cases on the wiki, just show up and let us know what works (or breaks). LVM autopart testing

Hey, folks. So the Big LVM Autopart Controversy has been kicked upstairs to FESCo: https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/964 If they say 'go with LVM', we'll have to do that. I have no idea what FESCo will decide, but we should cover our bets either way, I think, so it will do no harm to do some testing of the LVM autopart stuff over the weekend rather than wait till after FESCo makes up its mind. So, for those doing validation testing, if you could run a few test installs with LVM autopart and make sure everything's okay that'd be great. There's nowhere formal to report results - just yell on the list if you find a bug that doesn't affect ext4 autopart. I have a couple of updates.imgs available: http://adamwill.fedorapeople.org/updates-lvm.img against 18.19 (TC6) http://adamwill.fedorapeople.org/updates-lvm-1821.img against 18.21 (smoke12, possibly TC7) The first is for anaconda 18.19 - what's in TC6. The second is for anaconda 18.21 - what's in smoke12 and would possibly be in TC7. If more anaconda builds show up, I'll provide updates.img for them following the same name scheme. All you really have to do to test is use these updates.imgs and do a regular old autopart install. Two things should happen - the install shouldn't explode (unless you hit some unrelated bug, of course) and you should get LVs for your system partitions (not /boot) by default, just as you did with F17 and earlier. If you hit a problem, do test *without* the updates.img too before pulling the fire alarm, just in case it's not anything to do with the LVM change. You can also test autopart-within-custom-partitioning if you like. The button in custom part that says something like 'create partitions automatically'. It should also give you LVM-based partitioning with this patch. (It does for me, I checked). Fedora 18 Beta Change Deadline pushed back by one week

FESCo, in cooperation with Fedora QA and Fedora Program Manager, decided to push back Fedora 18 Beta Change Deadline by one week due to unfinished/non testable functionality required for the Beta release. For more information (and voting results) see FESCo ticket #946, "Fedora 18 Beta freeze readiness: is major functionality in place?" [1]. Beta Change Deadline/Features 100% Complete is now 2012-10-23. There are still a few unfinished features [2], please update/postpone (to F19) your features before reaching the deadline. As a result, ALL MAJOR MILESTONES, and their dependent tasks, will be pushed out by one week [3]. Blockerbugs 0.2 Released

The next version of QA's blocker tracking app was pushed to production today. New features include: - Blocker/NTH Fix Tracking - Test spin tracking - Interface re-design * With help from the design team and Máirín Duffy in particular - Basic stats on blocker/nth bugs - Lots of minor fixes http://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/ For testers: - There is always an up-to-date list (synced every 30 minutes) of blocker and nth fixing updates that need to be tested For developers: - Since blocker and nth fixes are now being tracked like the bugs are, updates with blocker/nth fixes should get more attention - If you do have a blocker/nth fix, please mark it as such in bodhi or it won't be noticed by the new app. If you notice bugs or have suggestions on how the app could be improved, please file an issue in the qa trac: - https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-qa/ Thanks, Tim

Fedora 18 Power Management testday on Thursday (2012-10-11) also on-site

Hi, I'm glad to announce Power management testday, date: 2012-10-11 (Thursday), link: [1] During this event suspend/hibernate/resume, backlight control as well as tuned daemon will be tested. You can also measure & compare power consumption with others. As a new F18 kernel feature suspend to both (AKA hybrid suspend) will be also tested. And there are prepared even more test cases for you. Users with laptops, desktops or even with virtual machines are also very welcome, your report will be useful even if not complete. LiveCD ISOs will be prepared for you for easy testing. As a bonus we prepared on site testday. If you are near to Brno city (Czech Republic) you can bring your HW to Red Hat Brno office [2] (second building, 4th floor - visitors room) from 13.00 to 17.00. ABRT test day 2012-10-01 recap

Hi, this is a recap of ABRT test day, which happened last week: * There were seven participants writing down valuable testing notes on wiki. This is in line with previous Abrt test days. * Big thanks for your effort! * * There were 2 bugs already reported before the test day which more or less affected testing. These are fixed by now and ready for our testing: 859674 ON_QA - abrt ccpp plugin should require elfutils 854266 ON_QA - abrt should open its cache files for append, not write. * During the testing, several new issues were found and reported as bugs: 861872 NEW - abrt-gui processing window is wider then screen, without reason 861880 ON_QA - Confusing warning message when reporting a problem 861899 NEW - [RFE] make possible re-entering BZ credentials if bug processing fails due to bad BZ username/passwd 861973 NEW - QA: Testcase ABRT Logger plugin fail 861996 MODIFIED - abrt-retrace-client: checks for corrupted dump dir are inconsistent 863813 NEW - Clicking on the abrt-applet notification after an application crash does not immediately invoke abrt-gui 864891 NEW - Abrt should inform user that it will append comment to existing bug 861989 CLOSED CURRENT - [abrt] libreport-gtk-2.0.14-1.fc18: atk_bridge_adaptor_cleanup: Process /usr/bin/report-gtk was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV) * There were also several other issues, not yet reported as bugs. I will go through these and report them if possible. * Several test case issues were also reported, should be fixed for our next test day. Fedora 18 Beta Change Deadline pushed back by one week

Today at Fedora 18 Beta Change Deadline readiness meeting it was decided to push back Fedora 18 freeze by one week due to unfinished/non testable functionality required for the Beta release. Agreed: Due to upgrade functionality not being in a testable state, push schedule 1 week to allow it to land before entering beta freeze (+1 6, 0 0, -1 0 for FESCo, +1 for the whole QA, +1 for FPGM). 2012-09 Graphics Test Week recap

Here's the recap of the Fedora 18 Graphics Test Week. Note that there are no Fedora 17 Graphics Test Week numbers here because there wasn't one! The last one was Fedora 16. So the 'outcome' numbers have the results from the F16 test week added. As expected, we got more tests and more bugs filed this time than we did in F16; the F16 numbers were low because I didn't get the publicity and organization done properly. We got it done better this time, with many thanks to Martin Holec for covering some stuff I missed (and also for running a ton of tests himself, which pumps the numbers up too :>) Here's the numbers on tests conducted and bugs filed, with all the historical numbers for comparison. I counted each non-example line in the main results matrix as a 'test conducted'. I didn't count the runs in the 'bonus' 3D matrix, in order to provide a more fair comparison with previous releases. In future, once we have enough releases with the bonus 3D tests included, I may start using those numbers. The hardware tested seems to be a reasonable range, so it's not that we were only testing one small set of hardware that happens to work well. Radeon is broadly in line with historical trends. nouveau is at its 'buggiest' level ever, which is maybe worrying, though it's worth noting that quite a lot of the bugs filed related to the advanced 3D tests, and two of them were for a crash in extremetuxracer which is nothing to do with nouveau. As for participation, we had 113 tests run this time, a huge improvement on the 38 from F16, about even with F14, but still a bit below the other releases from F11 to F15, so we can still make things better for F18. Here's the chart for how reported bugs are handled, adding the results from the F16 events (this chart gets updated on a one-cycle delay, because it's concerned with how the bugs filed are handled after a reasonable amount of time for the developers to look at them, and as noted above, there was no F17 event, so we're adding the F16 results this time). Also, if you try to reproduce these numbers, note that you'll want to remove the bugs 123456 and 234567 from the lists - they're used in the 'example' entries in the results matrix. The numbers for older releases are copied/pasted, not re-generated each time. In the end though it's probably a result of the overall neglect of the event in that cycle, so we'll have to wait for the F18 numbers - where the bug count is up again - to draw any conclusions. Re the asterisks on radeon - one of the 'open' bugs is #698011, which is actually CLOSED UPSTREAM but counted under 'open' because it's open upstream. It's actually under active development right now, it looks like a patch that fixes it was posted at the end of September. So probably, if I'd done this recap a week later, that bug would be counted as closedfixed not open, and the radeon numbers would look better.
