CUPS - GS - question/problem

Cups uses Ghostscript to print to non-Postscript printers. And it needs its own version of gs, with its print driver installed in it. OK. I just had problems printing to one printer that I KNOW I had been able to print to before, and ran it down to there being two copies of gs on my system,- one in /usr/bin/gs the other in /usr/local/bin/gs and CUPS using the wrong one. Ive LOOKED but havent found any way to configure CUPS to use a specific version (path) to gs. My hope was that this would be in cups.conf, but no luck. So the question. Is it possible to configure CUPS to use a specific version of gs??? and yes, there are reasons for my having two versions on the system. -- Reg.Clemens reg(a)dwf.com

AMD64 Preview Release Updates

For those of you running the AMD64 preview release, please download and install the updated yum located at: http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/fc1_x86_64/updates I will be posting updates there as they are available (with announcements here of course). Currently there are 2 updates. - kernel: is just an AMD64 build of the FC1 errata kernel, please see the changelog posted by Dave for changes here. One extra note, the preview release kernel has libata merged, the updated FC1 kernel does not, so do not update if you are currently dependant on it. - yum: Yum is taken from the latest yum daily snapshot RPM. The only modification here is the yum.conf. You will need to replace your yum.conf with the one included in this package or add its entries. The largest change here of note is that this yum actually works with AMD64. I will post more as they are available. Justin M. Forbes

rewrite bootloader

Dear All, I have several experimental Linux installs, plus one production install, with a boot floppy for each. The latest install, of course, puts its own bootloader on the hard disk (the Fedora 1.0 bootloader was overwritten by Mandrake 9.2). Now, my problem is that I want to make Fedora 1.0 boot from the hard disk, but I cannot find the maintenance tool to rewrite the bootloader in any of the menus. What am I overlooking? CD burning software

Is anyone opposed to including K3B (both SuSE and mandrake have it); it is the only CD burning software that can compare with the commercial applications out there. It looks like ROXIO Easy CD Creator and works like it. The Cd software included in Fedora requires root access (absurd, users should be able to use the software to duplicate and burn music CDs etc.).

Basically, you need the directory isolinux from the 1st cd, and some additional options to mkisofs and you can make your own boot.iso And if you include a ks.cfg, you can boot your kickstart install using 'linux ks=cdrom' (or better yet, modify the files in your isolinux copy to set that as the default, you can do that in isolinux.cfg) David Jansen

But isn't the default on the majority of ATA drives to have write cache enabled ? Also the LKML thread at http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0304.1/0450.html is very informative. So my question is , how can one test if the journalled FS on his disk is actually working as it should or is it just waste of time and giving a false sense of safety ? Would fsck ( or maybe some other tool? ) detect if this problem had happened ? I have filed a request for enhancement: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=111288 Please add your comments to the bugzilla entry to express your strong opinions either way. The RFE asks to include e3---which is GPL'd---as an [optional] component to FC. e3 can use EMACS-, Pico, Nedit, or vi-like key bindings, whichever the user chooses. The executable code size is between 3.8K and 34K, depending on assembler options, platform, etc. This makes it a good choice for a rescue environment or minimal installation. If e3 were part of the "pure" FC distribution, people would feel more comfortable using e3 as part of a vanilla FC rescue or minimal environment. I came across this editor while working with the LEAF (linux embedded appliance firewall) distro. TIA, Paul
