Kernel
by Don Springall
Am I imagining things or is the kernel stuck on 2.6.16-rc1-git4 ? Did the
upstream kernel crowd all go on a geek cruise or something ? Would be nice
to have iptables working again.

slmodem-2.9.11-20051101.tar.gz + ungrab-winmodem.tar.gz not working on FC5T2 kernel 2.6.15-1.1878_FC5
by Antonio Olivares
Dear All,
I have installed Fedora Core 5 Test 2 and
originally had slmodemd working successfully. I have
updated to the latest kernel 2.6.15-1.1878_FC5 and
now slmodem-20051101.tar.gz fails to compile. This is
just for testing purposes. New problems will arise as
a result of newer kernels and I am just reporting
back. Please see the following.

Xorg problem: What happened to XRaiseWindow?
by Ernest L. Williams Jr.
Hi,
When calling XRaiseWindow under Fedora, it does come to foreground when
covered by another window, hmmm? This used to work especially in RHEL
3. However, it does not work in FC5T2 or RHEL 4.
Please any ideas on this one?
I will show the simple code that reproduces the behaviour:

Another $0.02 ... From the perspective of long-time a college prof.
teaching students who are learning Linux through exploration -- I
appreciate the 'everything' button and would very much like to see it
(or an easy-to-use equivalent) remain in FC5.
(If it matters: yes, I do teach that that's not the way to install a
production system, and yes, I do also run Linux in mission-critical
environments outside of the college... since RHL4.2 :-)

FC5 - Encrypted File Systems?
by Marc Schwartz
Hi all,
I am trying to get a sense of the current status/plans for FC5 with
respect to encrypted file systems.
I have read through the relevant section at the bottom of:
http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/FC5Future
along with the Bugzilla entries listed there and the current Release
Notes for FC5-T2.
I also read the article at:
http://www.redhat.com/magazine/012oct05/features/hal/
which is intriguing.
Is it not clear to me how to differentiate planned enhancements versus
what has actually been implemented with respect to the changes for FC5.
I am presently using FC4 and have implemented encrypted partitions using
dm-crypt/LUKS as per:
http://www.saout.de/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php
My sense is that the plans include better integration with existing
utilities providing more streamlined mounting (including boot time) of
encrypted partitions.
Can anybody comment on the current status?
Thanks,
Marc Schwartz

OK, I was going to file an enh request regarding this, but since there
is lots of opines here, what do people think of the following as a
solution to the various views expressed:
1. Everything option (stays) removed.
2. For the list at left (the general groups), a right click popup is
provided, with two options.
a. unselect all [?ctrl-shift-a (gimp) not sure what other appz
standardize on]
All groups would be deselected, leave only the "base operating system"
(for firewall / special builders)
b. select all - [ctrl-a]
c. select all - default optional components
All default parts of each of the 6? groups would be selected.
3. For each package sub group (RHS) with options: again a right click
popup is provided with the same three options:
a. as above
b. as above
c. default selections (so if you make a mistake you can easily go
back, without restarting the installer - Probably also good for the left
list as well.
Coding could be pretty simple (for items in chosen list, check= on/off,
not sure about the default selects - ignore for v1?)...(same in text
mode installer!)
Anyway, good potential solution ??? DaveT.
