Mouse Wheel gone
by Christian Menzel
Since the latest xorg-X11 upgrade I receive the already mentioned XKB
error and the mouse wheel is not working anymore.
Has anybody seen this behavior?

I have the same symptoms...
rpcinfo says that nfs et.al. are running.
Something has changed in test 2, since the same PC running RH9
accesses that host just fine.

/etc/inittab went away && wlan has weird device name
by Julian C. Dunn
I just did a yum update, updating to initscripts 8.31.1-1 (among other
things like a new kernel). When I rebooted, init complained that inittab
was missing, so I rebooted into rescue mode and found that there was
an /etc/inittab.rpmsave but no /etc/inittab. Has anyone else had this
problem?
Also, I'm using a Thinkpad T42 (2378RAU) and the wireless card shows up
as a weird device after boot:
dev8569 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0E:35:FC:39:23
Does anyone know why?

autoconf breakage on x86_64.
by Sam Varshavchik
I don't know the right way to fix this, but something is definitely broken;
and something needs to be fixed, one way or the other. The question is what
exactly needs to be fixed.
Consider something like this:
LIBS="-lresolv $LIBS"
AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC(res_query, AC_MSG_RESULT(yes), AC_MSG_RESULT(no))
Here's what happens on x86_64:
gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall -I.. -I./.. conftest.c -lresolv >&5
/tmp/ccW7EeDX.o(.text+0x7): In function `main':
/home/mrsam/src/courier/authlib/configure:5160: undefined reference to
`res_query'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:5147: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
[ blah blah blah ]
| /* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2
| builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */
| char res_query ();
| int
| main ()
| {
| res_query ();
| ;
| return 0;
| }
The same exact test on FC1 x86 will work.
The reason appears to be that you have to #include <resolv.conf> on x86_64
in order to succesfully pull res_query() out of libresolv.so. You don't
need to do this on x86, and the test program generated by AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC
does not include any headers, but uses a manual prototype.
So, what now?

Please strip out the patch that brings up applications behind gnome-terminal
by Miles Lane
Hello,
I cannot understand why on earth xorg or Gnome
has been changed to render new application behind
gnome-terminal. Every time I run a program (surprise!)
I want to use it. I don't want to keep playing around
with gnome-terminal. So, can we please strip this
change out of Fedora Core?

Email list down?
by Mike Chambers
I don't seem to be getting any emails from any Fedora list, maybe few
more. So I am asking if any or all of them are down or not?

Evolution and pgp problem
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I seem to have a problem, but am not quite sure what to file it under as
the problem could be evolution or it could be gpg.
The problem is very odd as well!
If someone emails me with a pgp signed email (and it doesn't matter if
it's on a list like this, or directly to me), evolution sits there
trying to verify the message. However, when it's sitting there, the app
seems to just stop dead - I can't change to another folder or anything.
Eventually, it will come back to life, but if I then try to reply, the
app just dies the death and I need to restart the program.
If the email is not pgp signed, I have no problems whatsoever.
I've looked in my .gnu-gpg/gpg.conf file and I don't have always grab
the key from the keyserver switched on.
Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking to try and fix this
before plonking it into Bugzilla?

More adventures with FC5
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Omen.com is now running FC5 on a Celeron 2000.
I had to set the motherboard to legacy IDE mode as
FC5 simply couldn't hack the advanced mode where
all the drives are accessible. Mixed IDE and SATA
is Windows country.
I had to compile ImageMagick from the original sources
in order to get gpsmap to compile. I was also able
to compile Xephem after loading various libraries.
I never got Linux to run on my Intel based office system.
So I sold the motherboard and got an AMD based motherboard.
After some shuffling of drives I was able to load either
FC5 or Opensuse 64 bit. AMD is Linux country.
During this adventure the Windows partition on my office
system had become unbootable. I ran Windows Rescue and
ran the boot repair programs. This resulted in a partition
talble the the FC5 installer refused to read. Suse could
read it but it was somewhat garlbed and installation was
impossible. Insert Live Linux was able to read and write it
without difficulty. Eventually I used the FC5 installer
to nuke the partition table and things have been peaceful
since.
