Sadly, NIS is still a product of choice for a lot of environments (as
ugly and insecure as it is). I dont think I have ever seen a NIS+
environment at any of the organizations I have worked at.. but that
was mainly due to the 'closed' nature of it. The main reason for NIS
to be used is that it really only takes 2-3 files, a couple of little
edits, and poof you have it working. I am just starting to look at
Fedora Directory Server and it looks like it will take a LOT more work
than that to get it working (or even getting a small LDAP service that
would duplicate the 3 things most people use NIS for: user accounts,
centralized passwords, and email aliases)

dropping nis would be a serious problem for a lot of folks, including
myself.
For simple multi-machine nss nis is still, by far, the simplest to setup
and maintain.

Not sure if this a php error - can someone confirm it?
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I have the following in a php file
$filenames = array("fred.pdf", "sid.pdf", "harry.pdf", "wibble.pdf");
for ($i = 0; $i < count($filenames); ++$i)
{
$command='/usr/bin/zip -9 '.$prog.'.zip ".$filenames[$i];
exec($command);
}
$prog is just a name.
If I set $prog to be getcwd()."foo", then no zip file is created.
Infact, I can set $prog to anything and nothing is created - with one
exception, $prog="/tmp/foo" - this will create the zip file in tmp, but
I can't then do anything with it as the permissions say it belongs to
apache:apache (copy () won't work, neither will cp or mv).
I cannot chown the file via php either (chown ('/tmp/foo.zip',
'paul:paul');)
Have I hit a bug or is it me needing another lobotomy to remove things
that shouldn't be there?

Repeated failures trying to update glibc using yum/rpm
by Art Haas
Hi.
I've got rawhide running on one machine, and by and large things work
well. The only repeated snag of late has been trying to update glibc,
as all attempts fail with rpm dying due to an assertion error. This
problem is in bugzilla as bug #190488, and is currently marked as a
'wontfix' bug. I have the most current RPM package for rawhide
installed, btw.
My question is just how is everyone else managing to get the last couple
of glibc updates installed? Is there an option or set of options needed
to make RPM skip the check where the assertion fails? Are people using
some other program to do the installation, or perhaps built their own
RPM binary and been using that?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, workarounds, etc.
Art Haas

system update with yum produces sgmentation fault
by parta
Hi
I installed FC5 from cds and then ran 'yum update' to update my system.
After system update, my system has become unstable. Appliations start giving
segmentation fault after running a while. If i restart my system, they run
again perfectly for a while and then segmentation fault pops up. Is there a
way to figure out which package has made my system unstable.
