NVIDIA Question
by David St.Clair
This may be a dumb question, but why can't Redhat distribute NVIDIA binary
drivers?
In NVIDIA's licence (http://www.nvidia.com/object/nv_swlicense.html) it
says:
"2.1.2 Linux Exception. Notwithstanding the foregoing terms of Section
2.1.1, SOFTWARE designed exclusively for use on the Linux operating system
may be
copied and redistributed, provided that the binary files thereof are not
modified in any
way (except for unzipping of compressed files)."
So, what's keeping RedHat from putting the drivers in the distribution? If
it's a GPL
thing, would it be easy to just download it during installation or at
least give the option to the user?
Thanks,

Mouse goes crazy
by Jonathan Villa
Ok, I have had Yarrow working well for a while now, but yesterday I
started experiencing some odd issues with my mouse. All of a sudden it
stops working correctly. The only thing that seems to fix is to kill X
and run mouse-test, then restart.
Any ideas?
Also, I have FC 1 running on a desktop which is hooked up to a KVM
switch. Whenever I go to another PC, and return, the same thing
happens, the mouse goes crazy.

I have the same symptoms...
rpcinfo says that nfs et.al. are running.
Something has changed in test 2, since the same PC running RH9
accesses that host just fine.

/etc/inittab went away && wlan has weird device name
by Julian C. Dunn
I just did a yum update, updating to initscripts 8.31.1-1 (among other
things like a new kernel). When I rebooted, init complained that inittab
was missing, so I rebooted into rescue mode and found that there was
an /etc/inittab.rpmsave but no /etc/inittab. Has anyone else had this
problem?
Also, I'm using a Thinkpad T42 (2378RAU) and the wireless card shows up
as a weird device after boot:
dev8569 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0E:35:FC:39:23
Does anyone know why?

FC6 Pre-release (Test4)
by Will Woods
Greetings!
I know many of you have had problems installing FC6t3. Let me offer my
apologies, and my sincere thanks to you for *trying* to help us test
Fedora Core.
We still want your help! In order to make that happen, we've decided to
do an early release of pre-FC6 disk images. They will only be available
by bittorrent, in order to save us time waiting for the mirrors to sync.
This release should fix the most common bugs preventing installation of
FC6t3, including:
#206913: Anaconda exception on upgrade from FC4
#206876: GRUB claims initrd is too big for memory on x86_64
#208080: ahci/ata_piix mixup causes Anaconda to not find SATA disks
#206453: installed x86_64/ppc system missing initrd, cannot boot
#206202: Anaconda traceback during lvcreate on ppc64
...and others.
We'll make an announcement when the images actually become available.
Let me know if there are any questions.

Version : 2.6.18
Release : 1.2189.fc5
Summary : The Linux kernel (the core of the Linux operating system)
Description :

upstream release, 2.6.18, which fixes a huge number of bugs,
in over 6000 independant changes.
In the last few updates, some users upgrading from FC4->FC5
have reported that installing a kernel update has left their
systems unbootable. If you have been affected by this
problem please check you only have one version of
device-mapper installed
See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=207474

fc6 pre x86_64 install report
by Tom Horsley
Only one anaconda crash this time :-). I tried to select "Software Development"
in addition to "Office apps" in the initial package selection page, and anaconda
fall down, go boom.
(I'll make a bugzilla with the traceback info I wrote to a floppy).
Started again and just went directly to custom package selection without touching
any toggle buttons on the first page - that worked better. I was able to select
almost everything to install, but I could swear that previously I was able to
just right click on the package group name and pick "select all optional". Now I
have to first click on the toggle to say select that package group, then right click
before I can select all optional packages.
Did get through the network setup OK with a static IP this time, and was able
to leave out IPv6 setup with no complaints.
Did encounter the already reported bug about no keyboard during firstboot, just
moused my way through it and defined a normal user after booting and logging
in as root.
Having gotten the system up and running, I can't seem to find any extras.
If I type something liike "yum install yumex" it says "What are you talking
about, there is no such package". Don't know if this is due to the prerelease
perhaps already claiming to be fc6, but no actual fc6 repos exist yet?
One very mysterious improvement, this x.org bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7243
still crops up during anaconda (I get to see a desktop pretending to
only be able to display 800x600 during install), but once the firstboot
happens, the automatic X config somehow manages to do 1920x1080
correctly (and I thought I'd been told anaconda uses the exact same X
config as the full system). Don't know why this is working under
normal circumstances now, but not in anaconda. (Not that I
object, mind you :-).
And most important, I was actually able to boot after installing,
the initrd didn't go missing on me.
