FC6Pre images relelased!

Hello!
As promised, we have pushed FC6 prerelease images to the trackers:

The following install-blocking bugs have been tested and should be fixed
in these images:
#206876: GRUB claims initrd is too big for memory on x86_64
#206453: installed x86_64/ppc system missing initrd, cannot boot
#206202: Anaconda traceback during lvcreate on ppc64
#206913: Anaconda exception on upgrade from FC5
#208080: ahci/ata_piix mixup causes Anaconda to not find SATA disks
This is not a complete list of bugs fixed, just some of the most
troublesome installer bugs from Test3.
There *is* a known bug when trying to install using Fedora Extras in
this release. Luckily we already have a fix for it that you can use with
these images! Just follow the directions here:

This will also help us test the Anaconda Update code, so if you're
thinking of using Extras, please give it a shot!
Another note: the keyboard won't work in firstboot. The mouse is fine,
though, so you can click your way through. I believe we already have a
fix for this, but it just didn't make it in time for this release.
Enjoy the updated images, and happy testing. Be sure to keep your
newly-installed FC6pre systems up to date and keep on testing as we make
the final push towards the release of FC6!

ata_piix and ide drivers in kernel

I'm having problems getting my Dell Inspiron 9300 to see my DVD-RW as a
SATA device (/dev/sdb[x]) instead of a IDE device (/dev/hdb[x]).
This seriously impedes performance of the drive.
Having done a little searching around the Internet (what a tool!) it
appears the problem may be that both the ide and ata_piix drivers are
included in the kernel as modules and that this results in the ata_piix
driver installing before the ide driver and as such the DVD-RW drive is
then seen as an IDE device.
It's suggested that the ide driver be compiled into the kernel so that
is installs first which results in the ata_piix driver then picking up
the DVD-RW drive and getting it Right(TM).
Can someone interpret what I'm saying (;-]) and then comment on how
these two drivers are included in the kernel and whether or not this
might affect the outcomes.
Alternatively, can someone suggest another fix for this.

"busy" disk trouble

I wonder if anybody else have seen something like that.
I have a disk, a rather sizeable one, on which just was written a
partition table and it looks like that:
Disk /dev/sdb: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 30401 244196001 83 Linux
No problems so far. Now I am trying to create a file system
on this.
# mke2fs -j /dev/sdb1
mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006)
/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a
filesystem here!
??? Neither fuser, nor lsof, nor searches for anything else reveal
why /dev/sdb1 could be "in use". OK, lets try to force the issue
# mke2fs -F -j /dev/sdb1
mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006)
/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; mke2fs forced anyway.
/dev/sdb1: Device or resource busy while setting up superblock
If I will try "strace" the above then I can only see:
stat("/dev/sdb1", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0640, st_rdev=makedev(8, 17), ...}) = 0
open("/dev/sdb1", O_RDONLY|O_EXCL) = -1 EBUSY (Device or resource busy)
and I am not much wiser. It does not appear that anythying on
initrd or udev is really holding to /dev/sdb or /dev/sdb1, or at
least not in some obvious manner.
Actually I started trying to add that disk to LVM, and with no
partitioning at all, but 'pvcreate' also refuses to do anythning
because this disk is "busy" (while 'fdisk' was happy to oblidge).
If instead of rawhide I will boot some older distro on the same
hardware then 'mke2fs' does not have problems with the same
partition. Any ideas what is going on here? Makes adding
a disk space to an installation somewhat "interesting".
Oh, this disk shows as /dev/sdb as this is a SATA device.

Long search for a owrkable Linux

I recently upgraded my office computer tp a Asus P5B-E and
Core Duo. The inability of any Linux I've tried to load
from the CDROM has already been mentioned. This is apparently
an endemic problem with the P965 chipset.
Then I decided to use my older A8N-E with AMD 3200+ on
the omen.com server. Omen.com was running FC5 with
updates. Unfortunately, FC5 paniced after running for
a few minutes. This happened several times.
I tried x86_64 versions of FC5 and FC6T3. They spontaneously
rebooted during install or on first boot.
SLED 10 eval (32 bit) loaded and ran, but I was not able to
get NAT working.
Slamd64 loaded and worked, but I was not able to get VNC
compiled. I did save the xorg.conf.vesa file that came with
it.
I was able to do a text install of the Red Hat 64 beta.
It lacked the Evolution client, something need to
have on the omen.com machine.
I was about to put the old slow motherboard back in but
I decided to try CentOS first. Graphics install scrambled
my screen but text install worked. Well almost - the
installed didn't see the second ethernet. Strangely enough,
the text install resulted in a Linux that insisted on booting
in graphics mode. I had to use a live Linux in text mode
to set the run level to 3.
I think Anaconda needs an option to use the vesa or some other
safe driver for the install as well as the default for Linux.
The Suse installer didn't seem to scramble the display during
a graphical install.
Fortunately, I did get a working, stable Linux to install
on the omen.com box. But it took a lot more work than I
expected.
It will be interesting to see if FC6T4 will load and run
on my office machine.

Testing rawhide install

Hi all,
I installed the latest rawhide (29 Sep 2006) last night via nfs. For the most
part it went OK but there were a few problems.
1. The disk had a previously failed install of FC6t1 on it. So I decided to
select the custom partitioning scheme in anaconda. I deleted the existing
volume group and tried to create a new one by clicking on the new button.
Immediately anaconda back traced. I filed this here:

I was able to get it installed by not deleting the old VG.
2. Is there some problem with the yum repos? If I do a yum list kde\* it
returns no packages. I tried doing yum clean but no change. This is the out of
the box yum config. I wanted to test the default config. I see the kde packages
in my local repo, so I should be able to get them from there but...
This is a Dell inspiron 2650 laptop with 500Mb of memory in it.
If someone wants me to do any more testing let me know. I will have time this
weekend to reinstall or whatever.

downloading prerelease, have silly questions while waiting...

I'm using ktorrent because it has more junk on the screen to keep
you occupied while waiting :-). One of the things it displays in the
status is very similar to other torrent clients, and I've never
seen any explanation of it. There are two boxes, one labeled
Leechers: the other labeled Seeders: Inside the boxes are numbers
like this: 5(10) or 1(1).
WHAT IN THE BLUE BLAZES DOES THAT MEAN?
Will I have to download the source to a torrent client, and decrypt
the code that prints status to find out why there are two numbers
and what the one in parens means versus the one not in parens?
Its cryptic stuff like this what causes unrest :-).
