Fedora-10 killed my computer ...
by Timothy Murphy
Has anyone found the F10 has done something nasty to their BIOS?
I transferred the Fedora-10-Snap3-i686-Live-KDE.iso
to a USB stick following the instructions at
<http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f9/en_US/sn-making-media.html>.
This went fine; I like the new (I think) liveusb-creator program.
I used the USB stick to install Fedora-10 on two Thinkpads.
Then I tried it on a machine with an Asus/AMD motherboard.
The Live CD seemed to start OK, but then it froze.
Now for the disaster.
When I went to re-boot the machine
it said "NO Keyboard Detected --- Press F1".
On pressing F1 I found that the keyboard was indeed disabled.
But after a couple of seconds Fedora - the default OS - booted,
and when it started the keyboard was working normally.
I changed the default to Windows in grub.conf , and re-booted.
Again, I could not change the chosen OS as the keyboard was disabled,
but Windows started up fine.
I could not get back to Fedora easily, as I could not access grub.conf
in Windows; but I was able to use a Knoppix CD
to mount Fedora \boot , and edit grub.conf .
Now, my question is:
Was the fact that this happened after running F10
a pure coincidence?
I'm intending to look at the CMOS battery,
and perhaps try re-installing the BIOS.
Any other suggestions gratefully received.

F10Snap3 KDE LiveCD: no graphics on Mobility Radeon 9600
by Markku Kolkka
I tested Fedora-10-Snap3-i686-Live-KDE on my HP nc6000 laptop,
and the system booted to a black screen. Ctrl-Alt-F1 gave me a
working text console, so the problem is failing X
startup. /var/log/messages contains:
Oct 25 22:01:50 localhost kernel:
[drm:drm_buffer_object_validate] *ERROR* Failed moving buffer.
Oct 25 22:01:50 localhost kernel:
[drm:drm_buffer_object_validate] *ERROR* Out of aperture space
or DRM memory quota.
Oct 25 22:01:50 localhost kernel: mtrr: base(0x98b48000) is not

Oct 25 22:01:50 localhost kdm[2948]: X server for display :0

If I use the "nomodeset" parameter the system works normally. I
guess modesetting bugs should be filed against kernel?

Will shared swap bite me?
by Bill Davidsen
I have to set up a machine as dual boot 32/64 bit and I would really love to not
waste space on swap partitions being duplicated if I don't have to. That said,
if I do two installs and use the same swap partition, what evil will come of it?
The only obvious issue I see is suspending the non-default kernel and trying to
boot the other (found that in FC6) and I can avoid that. Any other know issues I
have to avoid?
The object is to run one 64 bit program without reinstalling the whole stable 32
bit environment.

Newer Kernels: Boot failed (Bug in Bugzilla)
by Roger Grosswiler
I installed 9.92 recently my dell latitude. Everything went well until the first boot.
The system didn't ask for the disk-encryption-password, the plymouth-progress-bar moved
and hung at the end. I rebooted, supressed rghb and quiet in in grub and found the
following messages
- Logical Volume not found (There is a Bug filed in Bugzilla, hoping this meets also my
problem)
- Boot failed
finito, basta.
I couldnt make my mkinitrd as i didnt have modules installed. I tried also a newer
kernel from koji. Same effect.
Does anybody know, if there is hope to get this resolved? I just got it running when
installing from live-cd.
I have also some sideeffects i didnt have with 3d desktopeffects, i havent had when i
installed fresh from rawhide and everything went well.
at least, with the kernel from 9.91 (livecd) i have a working system to test.

Note to testers of F10: scanbuttond
by John Summerfield
I've just updated an FC5 system to F9 and one of the benefits is that
the attached HP Laserjet 3052 (multifunction printer scanner copier) now
works as a printer. Indeed, it "just works."
I thought to try scanning, and discovered scanbuttond which seems a
wonderful idea, except as installed it doesn't actually work.
It has a startup script to run it as a daemon, and is supposed to run
various programs when a "scan" button is pressed. I used quotes because,
judging from the comments, it is supposed to handle buttons for
scanning, printing, emailing (but not, as far as I could see) faxing.
However, it doesn't seem to recognise my scanner, and even it it did it
would not work. It calls scanimage with the argument "-depth 8" and
scanimage, in F9, does not understand that.
It gets a little worse.
The script, that is supposed to run a part of the daemon process can
call the Gimp and Thunderbird, depending on which button is pressed. I
don't know a way a daemon process, even one running as root, can open a
GUI on a user's desktop.
It seems to me that it needs a little testing, and that it didn't get it
before release in F9.
At the very least, "--depth" has to be removed from the scanimage
command (unless F10's scanimage understands it). If testers with HP MFPs
and such can test it, that would be really good. I don't have an HP MFP
and F10 system close enough to do any testing.
I note that there are shared libraries for other brands, it might be
that the task of getting it working with scanbuttond might not be trivial.
btw The package needs improvement, conf files aren't flagged as conf
files and doc files aren't flagged as doc files, and a man page would be
really good. Debian may have one (Debian rules require it).
And, the script that is urn when a button is pressed has internal
configuration. That should be stripped into a separate file and sourced,
so as to facilitate fixing other bugs in the script, such as "--depth"
I've mentioned.
Have fUn!

XO: Could not update .ICEAuthority
by Bryan Kearney
I had been getting this error after autologin, so I re-installed
everything (new SD card files and removed /home/liveuser directory from
within sugar). On the next reboot, I ge thte same error:
Could not update .ICEAuthority file /home/liveuser/.ICEauthority
Any ideas what I have done? I did remove the replace_overlay command in
the boot line. Could that be it?

rawhide testing results
by Chuck Anderson
Here's my comments on installing rawhide today. I'll work on
researching/opening bugs when I have more time.
Dell Optiplex GX620. Radeon X600, two Dell 2001FP monitors whose
native resolution is 1600x1200, connected via DVI. I installed to a
new LV created out of free space on an existing VG that was on an
encrypted PV. Otherwise I chose mostly defaults throughout the
installer.
1. Anaconda font was too small. It was hard to read the text. It may
be that the wrong resolution or DPI was chosen. See also #2.
2. Default dual-head "clone" or "mirror" mode behaves strangely with
KMS. In Anaconda, the 2nd monitor didn't scale the image to fit the
LCD, but the 1st monitor did. When changing VT's back to X/Anaconda,
the 2nd monitor no longer mirrored the 1st. Instead, a frozen version
of whatever the last text console contents were left behind on the 2nd
monitor.
3. Lots of Anaconda warnings about unreadable partition tables for
devices: ram0 - ram15, dm-0, loop0, etc. Had to manually ignore all
these warnings many times.
4. Anaconda warning about "unable to determine geometry of file/device
/dev/loopX" for loop1 - loop7. Had to manually ignore this many
times.
5. Partitioning screen selections/data is cleared when starting to
format the filesystems. This is kinda scary since it leads you to
believe that all your partitions/devices were deleted. In actuality,
everything is fine.
6. No UUIDs are shown on the Partitioning screen. It would be nice to
have these for when you are working with existing disks and you have
an old fstab printed out on paper so you can match up the devices with
the UUID= lines in the fstab.
7. initrd failed to decrypt root fs on bootup after installing. This
was fixed with a new mkinitrd:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468856
8. After fixing #7, I get prompted for the password to unlock the PV
(/dev/sda7 in this case). Then I get prompted again, and again, etc.
up to 4 or 5 times. Each time I enter the correct password. What is
interesting is that the first time I'm asked (presumeably from the
initrd) the font is different and it doesn't say which device I'm
unlocking. The other 4 times (presumably from the rc.sysinit) it says
it needs to unlock /dev/sda7. The system boots up fine after entering
the correct password multiple times.
9. "telinit 3" keeps the keyboard in raw mode or something like that.
Every key you hit prints a weird different character. There is no way
to log into the getty like this. Had to reboot remotely from SSH.
10. Still need to create an xorg.conf file to do dual head because
spare memory isn't reserved for the larger virtual resolution.
System->Preferences->Hardware->Screen Resolution still fails to notify
the user when xrandr fails because of this. Uncheck "mirror", drag
monitors side-by-side, click Apply, nothing happens. Also, it's still
hard to tell which monitor is which in the applet, even with the green
and red identifying blocks, because in clone/mirror mode, both blocks
are green! Bad user interface experience.
11. After creating xorg.conf with virtual resolution to encompass
3200x1200, dual-head mode doesn't really play nice with KMS. Had lots
of issues with the 2nd monitor going blank/off and not being turned on
again, xrandr not configuring dual-head properly, etc. Had to turn
off KMS by adding "nomodeset" to grub.conf.
12. Metacity displays the window menu for each window on the left head
no matter what. For windows that are actually on the left head,
everything works correctly. For windows that are on the right head,
the menu is disembodied from the window it belongs to, all by itself
on the left head, usually at the far right edge of the left monitor.
(my main monitor is on the right, left one is secondary).
That's it for now.

fedora 10 beta ==> current rawhide
by Antonio Olivares
Dear all,
I have gotten a new machine and I installed Fedora 10 Beta and currently updating it to current rawhide 1.3 GB of updates are coming in currently. I formatted the root partition ext4(used ext4dev). Last time I tried that, I could not boot to latest kernel, I am asking if I should change the /etc/fstab to ext4 because the one that I had before had ext4dev and the newer kernel(s) had ext4 only. Should I change it now that I can and reboot and boot into the newer 2.6.27.4-5??.fc10 kernel?
I could not submit smolt profile since the machine was not on the network. I manually assigned an IP to get the updates. Tomorrow in the morning I will see what happens. Thanks for advice/suggestions offered.
Regards,
Antonio
BTW:
before the snapshot issue comes up, I cannot get torrent files. I can only get the releases from mirrors. I wanted to try a network install, but the documentation is not current and I do not want to ask for a nice howto that might not be available.
