ncurses wasn't installed -> no tput/clear/reset commands
by Chuck Anderson
Apparently nothing in the default install set requires ncurses, so
that leaves the system missing the commands "tput", "clear" and
"reset", the first of which at least is used by the default login
scripts:
#grep -r tput /etc/profile*
/etc/profile.d/colorls.csh: if ( "`tput colors`" == "256" ) then
/etc/profile.d/colorls.sh: [ "x`tput colors 2>/dev/null`" =
"x256" ] && \
I get an error when I open a new shell with tcsh:
tput: Command not found.
I guess the provider of /etc/profile.d/colorls.* (coreutils) should
Requires: ncurses? Or should this be put into comps?
"clear" and "reset" are such a basic commands I'd expect them to
always be there. My .logout has had "clear" in it for more than 10
years...

Java browser plugin/Liveconnect support status (and request to test!)
by Deepak Bhole
Hi All,
As some of you already know, we have been working on getting Liveconnect
support into Fedora 10 via the new Iced Tea Plugin. Liveconnect is a
feature that allows JavaScript from a browser (Firefox) to access
Java, and vice-versa. The newest build of OpenJDK
(java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-2b12.fc10 --
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=907625) should have
the latest of the plugin code. This will be in tomorrow's (2008-10-28)
rawhide.
Barring any critical bugs, this is the version of the plugin that will
go into Fedora 10. If you use any applets that don't work and would
like to see them working in F10, please try it out and file bugs
accordingly; I will try my best to squeeze in as many fixes as possible.
Also, while most users will not have to do this: If you use the Sun Java
Plugin, or if applets do not work after installing the new plugin rpm,
you may also need to set the plugin via alternatives. This is done by
'alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so' on i386, and
'alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so.x86_64' on x86_64
Known issues:
- chessgames.com has some drawing problems -- this is being worked on
- WebEx works, but requires firefox to be restarted for the first use
- Pages with cache_* params (very small percentage) may not work
Cheers,
Deepak
PS: I cannot take all the credit for this nice feature :) This is a
result of joint work between Tom Fitzsimmons (who started the project and
continues to provide input) and myself.

Selinux and Compiz
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
After installing the Nvidia driver I tried to enable special effects
but was thwarted by an AVC denial. I couldn't get the acceleration
enabled until I turned off SElinux.
It seems with Fedora and SElinux is it simply a matter of time
before SElinux throws a spanner in the works at which time
I have to get rid of it.
A security tool that is incompatible with normal use to the
extent it must be disabled offers no real security. Perhaps
it should be an add-on for security geeks instead of a default
annoyance.

Network manager's choosing of access point?
by Mogens Kjaer
x86_64, F10snap3 updated to rawhide.
My PC can see more than one access point, all of which
run WPA PSK and the keys are in my keyring.
Why does NM choose the AP with the lowest signal? Never
the AP which is right next to the machine.
Is there any way to control this?

Plymouth on ATI and nVidia
by Christopher A Williams
I would never have noticed this, save for that I saw a Youtube video of
it...
On my ThinkPad T400, Plymouth doesn't launch the nice pretty GUI loader.
Instead, I only get the text mode dark blue / light blue / white
progress bar across the bottom. Then X loads and away we go from gdm.
I realized that I have never seen Plymouth's "graphical glory" on any of
the computers I've tried F10 on (I've always run the 64-bit version).
These computers all have something in common: Either nVidia or ATI
graphics cards.
Is Plymouth supposed to support these? If so, I guess I can file a
bugzilla on it.
Cheers,
Chris

snap3 live testing
by Neal Becker
I'd like to give snap3 a test. I want to try a live media test (not HD install).
I see live cd media, but does the dvd include a live option? (That would give more software, and probably faster operation) Is my only live option the cd?

Repairing a mount configuration problem
by Petrus de Calguarium
I recently made some changes with the partitions on my system and neglected to update fstab. As the system booted, a message appeared, stating I could:
1. type Ctrl-D to continue (I tried that, and it caused the computer to reboot and stop anew at the same problem - not very useful); or
2. type the root password to fix the problem.
Upon trying the second method, the system logged me in, but I was unable to fix anything because the partitions were mounted read only. This is also not useful.
How am I supposed to fix the problem (I knew exactly what it was) when I am barred from changing anything?
