Video problem or ugly bitmaps?
by Tom Horsley
I tried playing freecell in f10 beta, and I feel like the card images are all
washed out and nearly impossible to see. Things like face cards with the faces
in light blue on a white background.
Is this just freecell itself with really awful images for the cards? Or is there
some gamma correction setting gone haywire in the nvidia driver? (I know, I should
look at more images and see if the problem is only with freecell, but it was
so awful, I thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has noticed).

USB mount with encoding problem
by Benjamín Valero Espinosa
Last week I updated to F10 Beta from F9 (not installing it from scratch).
All works right, except that now on plugging my MP3 player (or my wife's
one) by USB, it is mounted as 'msdos' (as expected) but all the non-ASCII
characters are changed by a '?' and I cannot create files with that char in
the name.
I have tried to mount the device by hand passing the 'utf8' option and then
it works again as before (F9). What can it be? My locale is es_ES.UTF-8.

Installer pre-GUI phase erratic
by Leon Stringer
Hi,
I'm finding the pre-GUI phase of the F10B installer (on DVD) erratic.
(I'm talking about the phase after the boot menu and before the Anaconda
GUI loads).
Sometimes it says "Local media detected" (or similar) and loads the GUI.
Sometimes it prompts be (in text mode) for my language, my keyboard and
location of the install files and loads the GUI.
Sometimes it says "No install media found" (or similar) and I have to
restart.
Is this a known problem?
Thanks,
Leon...

Anaconda video problems
by Leon Stringer
Hi,
Just got round to downloading F10B so I'm a bit behind on the bug activity.
When I got to the second screen of the Anaconda GUI the text corrupted
as I moved the mouse around.
I see there are some significant video problems in Bug 464896 -
(nomodeset) Collective bug for all "Cannot start without nomodeset on
kernel command line".
I did start the installer with nomodeset but still get these problems.
I took a photo of the screen showing the list title and the list
elements are corrupted:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/leon.stringer/fedora/f10b-anaconda1.jpg
I also find that if I switch between page one and two of the wizard a
few times (i.e. clicking Next and Back) the GUI locks up completely
(although the mouse cursor still moves).
System is an Intel D845GERG2 board, I'm using the on-board video controller.
Is this caused by KMS problems describe in #464896 (even though I've
used nomodeset)?
Thanks,
Leon...

Fedora 10 Snap 3 Install And Update Success
by Robert L Cochran
Following my earlier post on Fedora 10 Snapshot 3, I obtained a new external USB hard drive and dedicated the entire thing to an install of snapshot 3. I had a flawless installation experience: I extracted and wrote the boot.iso image to a CD, used that to boot the laptop and proceeded to do an HTTP install. The idea is to connect the drive to my powered USB hub which is in turn connected to my Dell Latitude D420 laptop. I encrypted the installation. When did the first boot, password prompt came up for decrypting the hard drive, then the firstboot code ran, then my monitor went blank. It might be because this was on an external monitor connected to the laptop. I didn't think of that possibility at the time and simply turned the laptop off and then on again. Fedora booted fine, although there were two messy blue and white bars on the bottom of the external monitor.
Ran yum, got 494 Mb worth of updates, rebooted. So far I can at least log in and open a terminal and work from the command line, which I think is great.
Thanks

Setting JAVA_HOME In Fedora 10 Snapshot 3
by Robert L Cochran
I'm confused about whether I need to set JAVA_HOME as an environment
variable when I log in to a Fedora 10 Snapshot 3 box and if so where
should I point it to? E.g.
JAVA_HOME=????
If I use Tomcat then I do need JAVA_HOME set?
Thanks

Gnome-Packagekit makes me nervous
by Roger Grosswiler
i browse some packages for ruby, which makes me a little, little bit
nervous.
scrolling down, already resizes the application-groups and the
description-fields, which is not good to read.
would it be possible, to fix the size for description-field and
application-group?
Thanks,
Roger

ath5k module vs. MadWifi
by Scott Robbins
I am wondering, for those who have an AR5007EG card, if they are finding
that lately (perhaps 2 updates or so ago) that they are better off
reverting to the MadWifi drivers.
My results are not consistent. I imagine there are various differences
in the chipsets that I'm missing, but with two Acer laptops, one the
Aspire One, I get different results. With the 4720z, the latest kernels
and ath5k module works without any issues. On the AA1, it will
sometimes show nothing if doing iwlist scan, and other times, though it
will show available networks, will not get a DHCP address, nor work with
a statically assigned address. I don't use NetworkManager, I configure
it manually, so that shouldn't be a factor.
I note that the latest Ubuntu is disabling the ath5k module by default,
saying, in their release notes, that it will conflict with the MadWifi
driver--however, they seem a bit ambiguous as to which works better.
(They say that with some of the chipsets, the MadWifi won't work with
WPA, or maybe WPA2.) In that case, one wonders why they are disabling
the ath5k instead of encouraging people to use it--this is why I felt it
was a bit ambiguous, they just suggest that if your MadWifi driver isn't
working, install a backports modules with updated ath5k drivers.
The 4720z is working well with the ath5k. So this might be some issue
with the AA1, however, I have a few installations on this machine--those
that are using the MadWifi driver connect without issue, while Rawhide
isn't.
So, I'm wondering what other people are experiencing. Is the ath5k
working for you?
Thanks for any input--please note that at present, this is a fairly
trivial question as it's quite easy to blacklist and put in the MadWifi
driver. Then, I uninstall it and put back the ath5k with each update.
:)
