Determine Fedora Version
by Leon Stringer
Hi,
Apologies if I'm being a bit dim here. I've got various Fedora systems and have just wasted time trying to install packages on the wrong version (I was tired!).
But then I thought, how does a user determine what version of Fedora they're using? If I do System->About Fedora I get explanatory text but nothing about the version.
I know advanced users can do uname or query package versions but there should be an easy/obvious way. People writing the About text for Fedora 9, please take note. (Or just change the menu item text to "About Fedora 9").
TTFN,
Leon...

Trying to install F9 alpha failed
by mike cloaked
I downloaded the F9 alpha dvd iso and tried to install to a spare partition
on a laptop which already has an F8 installation on it.
Anaconda started up and asked for the usual keyboard etc settings, but as
soon as I had defined the HD directory for the HD install anaconda threw
an exception and the install hung with anaconda findExistingRootPartitions
errors. I could not save the traceback, nor copy out the stuff on the
screen, so could not sensibly put in a bugzilla report.
Can anyone shed any light on this or seen anything similar happen?
I also tried an install using the boot.iso and extracting the vmlinuz and
initrd.img to /boot and making a grub entry so that a URL install to a mirror
could be tried but this failed also - and did not even get to downloading
the second stage install file. The kickstart file was obtained from one of the
mirrors and modified.
Does anyone have a pointer to a procedure for setting up an install from either
method so that a rawhide install might proceed to an unused partition on the
HD and then the intention is to not write grub to the MBR but to the /1
partition and then chainload the install from the pre-existing grub entry for
f8.
If this sounds a wrong way to go about this please post, and suggest a better
method.

Thanks for your post. I've been using RHL and Fedora for 10 years and I didn't know that.
However, it's disqualified -- users shouldn't have to use shell commands for this. (IMHO).

krb5-1.6.1-8.fc7 (FEDORA-2008-2121)
The Kerberos network authentication system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
This update restores kinit's traditional behavior of prompting for a password
change when it receives a password-is-expired error from the KDC. It modifies
the kdb_ldap plugin so that it honors the 'nsAccountLock' attribute used by
Fedora (and Red Hat, and Netscape) Directory Server.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ChangeLog:
* Tue Feb 26 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com> 1.6.1-8
- stop adding a redundant but harmless call to initialize the gssapi internals
- kdb_ldap: add patch to treat 'nsAccountLock: true' as an indication that
the DISALLOW_ALL_TIX flag is set on an entry, for better interop with Fedora,
Netscape, Red Hat Directory Server (Simo Sorce)
* Mon Feb 25 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com>
- remove a patch, to fix problems with interfaces which are "up" but which
have no address assigned, which conflicted with a different fix for the same
problem in 1.5 (#200979)
* Wed Jan 23 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com> 1.6.1-7
- backport fix from 1.6.3 to get back traditional prompt-for-password-change-
on-expired-password behavior back in kinit (and other users of
krb5_get_init_creds_opt_alloc()) (#429918)

krb5-1.6.2-13.fc8 (FEDORA-2008-2066)
The Kerberos network authentication system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
This update restores kinit's traditional behavior of prompting for a password
change when it receives a password-is-expired error from the KDC. It corrects a
couple of problems in how login.krb5 (used by the rlogin and telnet servers)
dealt with expired passwords. It modifies the kdb_ldap plugin so that it honors
the 'nsAccountLock' attribute used by Fedora (and Red Hat, and Netscape)
Directory Server.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ChangeLog:
* Tue Feb 26 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com> 1.6.2-13
* Mon Feb 25 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com>
- in login, allow PAM to interact with the user when they've been strongly
authenticated
- in login, signal PAM when we're changing an expired password that it's an
expired password, so that when cracklib flags a password as being weak it's
treated as an error even if we're running as root
* Mon Feb 25 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com>
- remove a patch, to fix problems with interfaces which are "up" but which
have no address assigned, which conflicted with a different fix for the same
problem in 1.5 (#200979)
* Wed Jan 23 2008 Nalin Dahyabhai <nalin(a)redhat.com> 1.6.2-12
- backport fix from 1.6.3 to get back traditional prompt-for-password-change-
on-expired-password behavior back in kinit (and other users of
krb5_get_init_creds_opt_alloc()) (#433818)

Gnome error after update 28/02/08
by Fastie
Hi
After today's updates I get the following error when I boot up
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not
work correctly.
The last error message was:
Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
Any detail on this will help as I can now only have one window open.
Thanks
Chris

Rawhide 2/27 Installation Adventures
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
The x86_64 diskboot.img gives "boot error" using a USB
flash drive on an Asus a8n-e. An intel dg33bu doesn't even
see it.
The i386 version does work for an NFS install. Immediately
after entering the NFS data, a couple of pages of gibberish
scroll by before Anaconda starts.
When asking for the root password, the cursor focus should be set.
Anaconda would fail with an unhandled exception unless the time
zone was left on New York. I was able to install leaving the time
information unchanged.
Once installed,on the Core Duo and Intel DG33BU, the ethernet
apparently assumed a DHCP address instead of the assigned
static address. The correct address was shown by system>admin etc.
The assigned static address was honored on the a8n-e.
compiz --replace yields a white screen and dead keyboard
on both machines. The a8n-e had a nvidia 6600, the Intel
had a 7900.
