kde 4.3 beta1
by Rob Healey
Greetings:
I understand that the priority right now is to get Fedora 11 out the door
which includes smashing the blocker bugs first...
I was curious if kde4.1 beta1 might be something coming to updates-testing
or will it be something coming to Fedora12???
Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

X11: Maximum number of clients reached
by Mildred Ki'Lya
Hi,
I'm running Fedora rawhide since Fedora 11 beta, and everything worked
fine until recently. Now, if I run a session for a few days (I generally
don't log out, I suspend my laptop), after some time, I can't run any X
application anymore. I get the message:
Maximum number of clients reached
If I close some applications, I can continue for some time until the
error triggers again. Then, I have to log out, and start a fresh session.
If I use xlsclients, (after closing an application I'm quite sure
doesn't eat up all connections to the X server, like gmpc), I don't get
such a huge list. Now for example, I get:
$ xlsclients | wc -l
44
From http://www.x.org/wiki/Development/X12 I can see there is a limit of
256 clients. I hardly reach the limit. But starting xterm for instance
is sufficient to trigger the error again.
Do you have any idea where I can gather information to know which
application is responsible?
As a side note, I'm using the RPM Fusion repository as well (we don't
have software patents in Europe, and I hope it'll stay this way). I also
have the flash player installed (I heard that troubles can come from
there). But I don't think this is the cause of the problem as I don't
visit that often sites containing flash. And the errors happens anyways.
Thanks.
Mildred

Creates an initial ramdisk image for preloading modules.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Fix mkinitrd creating a non booting initrd when parted-devel is installed and
the user has made configuration changes resulting in ld.so searching /usr/lib
before /lib (#502221) Note that if you are impacted by this bug, then in
order to benifit from this update you need to regenerate your initrd like this:
KVER=######-#### mv /boot/initrd-$(KVER).img /boot/initrd-$(KVER).img.old
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-$(KVER).img $(KVER) Where KVER should be set to the
kernel version-release for the non-bootable kernel you are trying to fix. This
is the string between "initrd-" and ".img" when you do a: ls /boot You can
find the version-release string for all installed kernels by doing: rpm -q --qf
"%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}\n" kernel This will print the full name-version-
release.arch for each installed kernel followed by the version-release.

duplicity-0.5.18-1.fc11 (FEDORA-2009-5610)
Encrypted bandwidth-efficient backup using rsync algorithm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
- Added support for RackSpace's CloudFiles, cf+http. - Added support for Tahoe-
LAFS from the patch, upstream patch #6743: Tahoe backend for duplicity
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?6743) - Only half of this bug is fixed but
it's still useful, upstream bug #21792: pipe call fails with an error OSError:
[Errno 24] Too many open files (https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?21792) -
Changed from using ulimit external command to resource.getrlimit to check open
files limit. - Removed one line of code left from some testing that I did that
caused a crash when the target dir was empty and collection-status was
requested. - Moved from using the df command to get temp space availability to
Python's os.statvfs() call. Not all df commands work the same way. - Upstream
patch #6813: Making changelist easy to read
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?6813) - Upstream patch #6814: Ignore
comments in filelists (https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?6814) - Upstream bug
#24825: duplicity warn on insufficient TMPDIR space availability and low max
open file limits pre-backup. (https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?24825) -
Upstream bug #25594: wrong backup statistics
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?25594) - Upstream bug #25976: Password
requested when not needed. (https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?25976) - Upstream
patch #6806: More graceful handling of old --short-filename files
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?6806) - Added tilde and variable expansion
to the source or target argument that is not a URL. - FTP backend was failing
on PureFTPd when the "-x ''" option was removed from the second ncftpls popen, a
fix that was implemented due to bug #24741. This fix does the ls in one pass by
extracting the last entry on the 'ls -l' listing. - If a file is unreadable due
to access rights or other non-fatal errors, put out error message and continue
rather than dying messily with a traceback. - Added tilde '~' expansion and
variable expansion in the options that require a filename. You can now have this
"--archive-dir=~/ArchDir/$SYSNAME" if you need it. No expansion is applied to
the source or target URL's. - Fixed problem I caused, again, where sys.exit()
was trapping instead of exiting. Added big note to not to do that again. -
After email voting among known duplicity contributors, the decision was reached
to revert to the GPL Version 2 license, so with their consensus, duplicity is
now underGPL Version 2. - Revert to calling NcFTP utilities (ls, get, put)
directly rather than scripting ncftp via pexpect by reverting to the 0.5.07
version of ftpbackend.py. - Changed fatal error regarding version 3.2.0 of
ncftpput to warning level since it has been reported that the problem does not
occur on most distributions. - Changed from log.Log with numbered log levels to
log.Debug (9), log.Info (5-8), log.Notice (3-4), log.Warn (1-2), log.FatalError
(0). The -vN option has not changed. Verbosity may also be one of: character
[ewnid], or word ['error', 'warning', 'notice', 'info', 'debug']. The default is
4 (Notice). The options -v4, -vn, and -vnotice are functionally equivalent, as
are the mixed-case versions, -vN, -vNotice, -vNOTICE. - Normalized include
statements and tried to insure that all duplicity includes were from the
duplicity module. - Upstream patch #6790: Add --exclude-if-present
https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?6790 - Add more error detection to FTP
backend. - Fix backends so sleep does not occur after last retry. - Fix so
BackendException does not cause traceback except when verbosity is at level 5 or
higher (Info level). - Adjust log levels so some errors show up with default
verbosity. - Fixed bug where an extra comma caused a traceback during a warning
about unnecessary sig files. Plus fixed print so the real filename would show up
and not a Python object representation. - Add Changelog.GNU to website and
distribution to add a bit of detail showing the CVS changes via rcs2log. Added
dist/mkGNUChangelog.sh. - Upstream bug #22908: Don't block gpg-agent
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?22908) - To fix the above, --use-agent was
added as a command line option. When this is specified and asymetric encryption
is enabled, then all GnuPG passphrases will come from the gpg-agent or
equivalent program and no passphrase prompt will be issued. - Upstream bug
#25787: Usernames with escaped @-sign are not handled properly
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?25787) - Upstream bug #25976: Password
requested when not needed (https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?25976) - Upstream
patch #6787: import duplicity.GnuPGInterface explicitly
(https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?6787)

QA group activities + goals discussion
by Adam Williamson
Hi, all. Just before I left the Raleigh office after my week for
orientation and getting to know the rest of the QA team, we had a
meeting to try and set some goals for Fedora QA for this year.
'We' is myself, James Laska, and Will Woods. In the spirit of community
that I am supposed to be bringing to the team, I wanted to throw these
topics open to the list to try and get your feedback on the same topics
we discussed.
Off the top, we should be honest and open: Red Hat pays Will, James and
now myself to work on Fedora QA full time. In my case, what RH want from
me is quite purely and simply to try and help the community - external
contributors - to improve the quality of Fedora as a project. In Will's
and James's cases, though, things are slightly different. Part of their
value is to produce tools and work on processes that, as well as
contributing to Fedora QA, also contribute to the process that
ultimately improves the quality of Red Hat's other products. In addition
to that, they're real engineers who know how to write stuff, and all
engineers like to come up with ideas and implement them. So, given that,
there are always going to be things that the internal QA guys are
working on that are decided by RH or by themselves. No matter how open
and community-friendly we are, it will never be the case that the work
and goals of those paid by RH are entirely determined by the
collaborative process.
However, bearing that in mind, it's still very valuable to RH, Fedora,
and the Fedora QA community to hopefully get all your opinions on these
issues, and it can certainly help to set my goals and help everyone
involved in this project think about what they're doing, what they'd
like to do, and how we can all work together towards the ultimate goal
of making Fedora an even better project.
So, to the topics! We set ourselves three simple questions
1. What does Fedora QA do?
2. What should it do?
3. What should it do first?
We'd like all of your input on these questions - just let us know what
you think. Broadly, we identified several things we - as a project - do:
* Exploratory testing: simply using Fedora, updates-testing, or Rawhide,
and complaining when stuff breaks. We agreed that this is at least as
important as anything else QA does, but sometimes isn't treated as such.
We agreed we should always emphasize that this is important and
valuable, try to help ensure it can be done as effectively as possible
(through things like the Bugzappers project), and try to always
communicate to everyone that simply doing this kind of testing is an
important and valued contribution to the QA project.
* Structured testing: this is the more in-depth testing we do, such as
regular testing of specific functions based on test plans, the use of
automated tools such as Beaker and Nitrate (once they're ready), and
test days. It also covers the case where another group contacts us with
a request to do specific testing on a certain function. A lot of
discussion here covered the Beaker and Nitrate projects; my take on
this, as a new guy, is that they sound like really great tools that will
help us a lot when they're ready.
* Bug zapping: all the great work done by the Bugzappers team, mainly
triaging and following up bugs to ensure they're properly handled from
report through to released update.
* Tooling: this is the work done, particularly by Will, to write the
tools that allow structured testing to take place. We agreed that it
would be good to get more contributions to this area, and that it's
important to communicate the tools we do / will have available so they
can be used to their full ability. This is important for things like
Bodhi - we'd like to make sure that kind of system is more widely used.
We also had discussions on things arising from the above, like the
importance of Rawhide, and meta-tasks like documentation and community
relations, which are important in attracting and enabling people to do
the actual tasks.
We also identified some specific goals. See also this Wiki page I
created: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Goals
1. Increase participation in Rawhide: it provides a huge benefit in
terms of identifying issues and having them fixed quickly and early in
the cycle.
I am going to work on communication and documentation issues around
that, and Will is going to work on producing a tool which simply tests,
every day, whether you can a) install Rawhide fresh and b) update from
latest stable+updates to Rawhide. This serves two purposes: it both lets
you know whether it's worth actually attempting to install Rawhide that
day if you wanted to know, and if we track the results over time, it
provides an incentive to the developers to improve the reliability of
Rawhide.
2. Make release testing more accessible
Encompasses many sub-tasks.
* defining what role QA serves in the release process
* defining what QA can do during the release process
* how can the community get involved?
* who tests what, when, and how?
This is what we're doing at present with the Wiki cleanup: the purpose
of this is to make it easier for people to get involved and know what we
do.
3. Strengthen the QA tools portfolio: aim to have Nitrate available in
prototype form by June, as we believe it will be really useful both in
improving the amount and quality of testing we're able to do, and
providing a fun and easy-to-use system that will get more people
involved with QA. There's also Beaker, which may take longer. This is
what wwoods is mainly working on.
So, what's your opinion on the above? Do you have anything to add to the
lists of what QA does, or should be doing? Do you feel there are any
specific problems stopping us performing at our full potential, that
should be solved as soon as possible? Do you have any ideas on making QA
more accessible and getting more people involved? Please let us know.
Thanks!
