worked like charm.

Rather than muck about with ~/.bash_profile and risk breaking something else, I put the following in a script file:

LANG=C /full/path/to/acroread $1

Try something like:
  [user@host dir]$ LANG=C ./acroread

Does that work? (I haven't installed the Fedora Core test on any of my
systems yet, so this is just an educated guess.)
