I looked a little further, and odds are you're right, this is there are
a number of changes in this area in the new evolution development
snapshot. The code doing the icon hunt is in evolution, and appears to
have been reimplemented. Details here:

Wish GNOME anoncvs was working at the moment - I can't get much further
