Does this mean - it won't work on machines less than 16GB?
It should work just fine. Remember, this was the default configuration
until recently, so if earlier kernels worked, this should too.
I tired it on my thinkpad - with 1GB (assuming it should be simlar
to
the current kernel-2.6.9-1.681_FC3 with 4g/4g) - but it wouldn't boot.

That's very odd, and not something I have an explanation for.
Did you have 'quiet' on the boot command line ? Removing it
may print something more useful.
