Note that the partition also can not be part of a raid array (not even raid 1).
I had some issues with that as all of the partitions on one of my machines were
in raid arrays. I filed a bugzilla, but the response was that they didn't
want to support this due to the bloat of needing extra drivers in stage1.
For the record, I have that problem to, albeit via LVM not RAID.
