Same problem for me. Intel driver, if I run "X" manually from the
text console, the screen goes black. I can use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back
to a usable text console after this happens, and then I see
"Backtrace:" followed by "Segmentation fault".
I have a similar problem: gdm login greeter works fine, but X wedges
shortly after providing password:

For me, there is a kernel oops that seems to be related to DRI/DRM
code (I have compiz enabled). Backing up to kernel 0.73 restores
things for me.
