Presumably it's because so many processors these days are either Hyper-
Threaded or (soon) dual-core.  At some point, the benefit of building
and shipping uni-processor kernels is less than the cost.

Indeed.  The proportion of UP vs SMP x86-64's out there is only
going to increase in favour of SMP.  Last numbers I read showed
that HT EM64T's outsold AMD64's already.  As the UP kernel gets
less and less testing moving forward, it doesn't really offer
any great benefit to shipping it. Especially as the performance
overheads of running SMP locking on UP is negligable.

Finally, there's going to be an extra set of kernels for x86-64 xen
at some point, which pushes the total number of kernels up yet again.
As we're constantly battling for CD space, this tradeoff seemed worth it.

If test1 goes out, and it blows up horribly (ie, there are lots of
single CPU x86-64 boxes out there which can't run the SMP kernel)
we'll look at reconsidering this decision.  Given x86-64 doesn't have
the crappy lineage that it's 32bit predecessor has, I'm confident that
this won't be the case.

32 bit has a lot more history of crap hardware.  It's almost
guaranteed that there are 32bit UP boxes out there that won't
boot the SMP kernel.
(In fact, it's certainly guaranteed because the 686-smp kernel
 uses PAE, which not all 686's have)

x86-64 has had an APIC since day 1.  It hasn't had to worry
about crap like PAE.  As it doesn't have this baggage, the
decision is a lot easier to make there.

I spent a while going over the list of current 32bit kernels
trying to figure out a way to drop one of them.

- Dropping 586 kernels would likely get AMD K5/K6, Cyrix, VIA users
  screaming.
- Forcing all the non-PAE CPUs to use the 586 kernel and dropping
  the 686-UP kernel would get all the "my kernel isn't optimised
  for my hardware" people screaming.

So 32-bit is very likely going to stay exactly the way it is today.

One change that might happen though -- there are newer CPUs that
have (or will have soon) NX capability, but aren't SMP.
(VIA have a chip ready, Intel are alleged to be putting NX in their
 next line of laptop processors, probably AMD too).

To take advantage of NX, you need PAE enabled, which means these
kernels will need to run 686-smp even though they aren't smp.
I'll probably be doing some lobbying in Jeremy's cube for an
installer change on this hardware when I get some to test with.

Given that using NX on 32bit is a big win due to us being able
to use sysenter again, this is a very attractive feature.

What about the bloat and slowdown because of the unnecessary spinlocks 
and more complex scheduler code?

The locks shouldn't matter. AMD got locked operations on exclusive cache
lines right. Its generally only Intel boxes that had high lock costs. Not

And the only UP EM64T's I've seen have HT. Though, that could be
disabled, but I expect that the folks disabling it are in a minority.

It'll degenerate to a single runqueue on UP, so there shouldn't
be any of the complicated balancing going on.  Bloat-wise, it's
a tiny amount of change.

I had troubles with the 1411 version of the kernel not booting. I 
switched to the smp version and it booted, but the fan ran constantly.

Also, someone on the regular list seems to have a laptop with HT, so 
power management and frequency scaling might be desirable for these 
machines.

I've not heard any mention of complaints from HT users of speedstep-centrino,
so I've been assuming it all works just fine.

The cpufreq, battery applet and any other pwer feature fails to function

kernel-2.6.12-1.1400_FC5 seems to function while 
kernel-2.6.12-1.1421_FC5 and versions down to 1400 seem to fail. The 
last two at least booted.

The fan raced even when I was yet to log in. Top did not have much high 
activity. I did not stay too long with the temps rising cpu running at 
high frequency and temps getting to 80C.

Would the modules from the single processor kernel be setup for the smp 
version? I tested both versions with lsmod and the outputs were the same 
for loaded modules.

The person was running the non-smp kernel version before it did not 
boot. Noticing it was HT he installed and booted the smp version. No 
discusions continued into what did and did not work. The FC3 kernel was 
topic in the discussion.
Since no reports, maybe HT and booting the smp kernel is not common, or 
it works for these later processors.

Attached are the modules listed from lspci when booted into the smp 
kernel 1421. It seemed to match up with the uni except lacking 
functionality.
