FC15 hang at Create User screen

When entering password, chosen password did not result in good rating
(vs. it does in FC14).

Entered two additional characters which resulted in "purple Very strong."

Chose to hit backspace to make sure I knew what was in the field.
System hung.  Mouse moves as expected but neither mouse clicks nor
keyboard entries are accepted and processed.

In case it matters, "Add to Administrators (sic) group" was checked.

Addendum:

While the keyboard was non-functional per the immediately prior post,
it did respond to either ctrl-alt-f2 or ctrl-alt-f3 (lab notes don't
reveal which one), so the machine was restarted semi-gracefully
without loss of data and it returned to the expected place in the
install sequence.

Addendum 2:

When the Create User screen had been completed (wth a purple Very
strong password), when logging in, the login screen showed only Other;
 when the Other option was selected, credentials were not accepted for
the user associated with the just prior Create User screen nor would
it accept the credentials for root.

Addendum 3:

"Starting NTP service.  Please wait." did not complete in 20 minutes.
ctrl-alt-f2 was functional, ps auxw | grep ntp showed 4 lines of
output, namely:

S+ sh -c /sbin/service ntpd start > /dev/null
S+ /bin/sh /sbin/service ntpd start
S+ b/inbash /etc/init.d/ntpd start
S+ /bin/systemctl start ntpd.service

Addendum 4:

While ctrl-alt-f2 and ctrl-alt-f3 would function, allow logins, run
'ps auxw | grep ntp', each trip through the GUI resulted in another
set of four matches to the grep.

Finally, 'shutdown -r now' was echoed but not executed, resulting in a
requirement for power on reset which could lead to loss of data.

To be explicit, ctrl-alt-del was not functional at this point.

Hi Larry

All bug reports are appreciated, and Fedora has infrastructure to
receive them, but submitting them in the wrong place, as you are,
achieves nothing.

Well, there's nothing wrong, IMNSHO, in posting something like, I've run
into this, is anyone else getting it or is it one of those Just Me(TM)
problems?  If it is one of those things that no one else is
running into, especially if it can't be reproduced, filing a bug might
just be a waste of time.  (And might not be--it might be that it's a
program few people use.)

I would certainly cast my vote for a test-lounge area where we could
compare notes before approaching BugZilla.  e.g., regardless of
whether I set NTP sync true or false, I can't get past that screen
during the install.  However, I can ctrl-alt-f2 and invoke 'ntpdate
clepsydra.dec.com' and get the expected result.  However, if I invoke
'ps auxw | grep ntp' the output includes IIRC 4 programs per time I
have attempted to "forward" on that screen.

That said, I'm sure others are able to proceed past this point in the
installation, so it may be site|machine specific.

I tried fedora-qa on irc earlier this evening, but since it was my
first irc session, perhaps the reason I didn't get a response was a
cockpit error.

What's the Fedora way to suggest test-lounge, e.g.?

This list is fine. It's generally not a good idea to post five
completely different issues as 'addenda' to a thread about another
different issue, though. It only leads to confusion :)

ntpd refuses to work if it has to make an adjustment it considers too
big - you have to use ntpdate before firing up ntpd - but it should fail
with a coherent statement in that case and not just 'hang'. Not sure
exactly what it is you're hitting.

THANKS for your reply --- it is fully appreciated.

The mistake I made was that I thought that I would encounter 0 or 1
bugs while attempting the installation;  all of the addenda were
related to firstboot (IMHO, although I was advised to report against
anaconda).  The purple password-backspace was quite stunning.  From
there, I continued to encounter problems, the next with ntp, thus the
next addendum, sort of a diary, all entries are related and within the
scope of the code which is run when /etc/reconfigSys is set.

If no one else can duplicate the purple-password-backspace issue, then
I have to assume a problem with the Dell 340, although memtest looks
OK and the machine had done a great deal of work prior to the failure.

alt-ctrl-f2 would function, yielding a login time of a fixed 25
seconds regardless of the number of iterations.  Yet, 'w' showed no
noticeable load.  Once logged in (via alt-ctrl-f2), 'service sshd
status' would hang, so ...

I can't imagine how much work on the Fedora Team is caused by hardware
(read: defective) problems and really appreciate the the work of the
Fedora Team.
