[OT] nouveau packages for Fedora

Hi!
	Right now Rawhide is really boring (devel freeze). If you have a bit 
more time, nVidia card and would like to test nouveau¹ driver you can 
check this page → http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FedoraPackages

Compared to standard nv driver nouveau supports EXA acceleration and is 
a bit deobfuscated.

I know that it's a bit off topic for this ml, but Fedora is my distro of 
choice and I thought that it's a Good Thing™ to support OSS drivers. 
Binary-only blobs must die ;)

BTW nouveau requires X.Org X11R7.1 so you can't test it on FC5 :/

I got the rpms to compile and install. I could only get some garbled 
output compared to the nv driver. I changed nv to nouveau in the config 
file.
I could not find the other programs as described on the webpage referenced.

What kind of card do you have (chipset)? Could you upload somewhere
your Xorg.0.log? Is nouveau kernel module loaded?

It would be nice if you could contact directly with developers of
nouveau (#nouveau on irc.freenode.net). I'm only a dumb packager who
wants to make testing a bit easier.

Actually, this should be done automatically after reboot. I used
scripts from xorg-x11-drv-nvidia package from rpm.livna.org ;-)

Wouldnt it be easier for testers if you get this package into 
extras-devel repository?

I'm not sure whether it's feasible. It uses drm from git repo, so it
replaces drm.ko and other modules from kernel package. It's against
Extras guidelines. I presume that Dave Jones will tell "other my dead
body" ;)

To be precise: I put modules into /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/extra/

I have a NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro] (rev 15)

The program generated some rpms for libdrm for the git build which 
updated normally with rpm -Fvh.

I could not get a fully successful results and there is no nouveau 
modules. The build fails on  Compiling sources
                                     drm-kmod
With the last several lines below:

I'll consider contacting the developers with problems that I encounter 
if attempting further installation of a 3D nvidia card OSS driver.
Thanks personally for trying to get this launched into a reality, 
hopefully in the not too far from future.
I gave away one nvidia AGP card and another nvidia card was tossed back 
at a later date.

It probably would have automatically changed the entry in the xorg.conf 
if the build process ever got that far through.

nouveau service will disable nouveau driver if kernel module is not 
present (this is similar to nVidia driver from rpm.livna.org repo). You 
can alway turn it on/off manually by executing following command:

nouveau-config-display enable

or

nouveau-config-display disable

1° you have not placed kmodtool in ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES directory or
2° I have done something stupid in niff script ;-)

Oh, it's in xorg-x11-drv-nouveau package. It builds after kmod-drm.

I saw the 9 rpms in the RPMS/i386 directory in the build directory and 
thought all was well since there were rpms present and they were 
installable. My fault, sorry.

where I had the failure, so no wonder.

I've been testing my script with this kernel so it should work (maybe 
except missing linux/config.h file but this should be fixed soon in drm

I tried this and it keeps failing on the same module build. This is with 
2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 running now.
I keep getting a newer libdrm build with each attempt. The newly 
generated rpm upgrades fine when installed.
Is this source checkout and compile similar to that of Gentoo installations?

I get the same failure with the new script. The config.h file missing is

one complaint on exit from the script.

As earlier comments from the developers for X. Future inclusion of the 
driver would be great.
Exposure of this driver to testing by making this available in rawhide 
after FC6 is released would be ideal.

I do like the concept that the niff script is using to build these 
modules also. So until then, I'll check the site for newer versions 
occasionally.

Yes, it's a *bit* similar to portage ;) niff script do not support USE 
flags and it's written in bash scripting language (not python), though :P

It's like emerging some ebuilds but the final output is RPM.

It's a bug in drm sources. It should be fixed soon. You can remove all

#include <linux/config.h>

from drm/linux-core/* files or (the easier but uglier way):

touch /usr/src/kernels/<version>-<arch>/include/linux/config.h

Well, it's not done automatically, because standard xorg.conf in FC6 
does not have Section "Module" and nouveau-config-display can't handle 
this situation.

As a workaround you can add this into you xorg.conf:

Section "Module"
         Load  "dbe"
         Load  "extmod"
         Load  "fbdevhw"
         Load  "record"
         Load  "freetype"
         Load  "type1"
         Load  "glx"
         Load  "dri"
EndSection

Without it I don't know how to stop loading "dri" module by X server.

Developers now have more interesting work to finish (context switching,

I'm not sure whether it's the proper place to report bugs. nouveau 
developer != nv developers ;-) Did you post this links on #nouveau on 
irc.freenode.net?

caused by still not fixed drm module (card initialization part). You can 
only once run X server. Next run will crash your box. As a temporary 
solution you have to unload and load drm kernel module.

You have to first create account on nouveau.freedesktop.org wiki. Then

I'm considering packaging what few external drivers there are (nouveau, 
the N via forks, etc) in extras.  I'm already doing the core Xorg video 
drivers so it's not much additional load.

The major problem I'd have with putting them in core is having to decide 
among which driver to use by default, and I don't think there's any good 
way to express that within rpm or yum.  Extras gives you some level of 
opt-in, but that feels like an abuse if we eventually want the 
core/extras distinction to go away; then again, ideally there'd be no 
forked drivers either.

It's a hard problem, I'm certainly open to ideas, but I definitely want 
to see them get into the distro.

Why couldn't they be handled like the i810/intel set (minus the whitelist)?  
The in-tree driver is the default and automatic used.  If user installs

As long as we don't copackage, sure.  With i810/intel the new 
modesetting driver is expected to be the official version someday, but 
with the others the inheritance is less clear.
