testing kudzu

I had someone report a SE Linux policy issue related to Kudzu so I tried to 
reproduce it.  However I am having problems in getting Kudzu to do anything 
interactive.  I've tried installing a USB mouse on a system that previously 
had no mouse and installing a new network card.  But Kudzu didn't ask me any 
questions.

What can I do now when running FC4 with updates and commonly available 
hardware to get Kudzu to ask me a question at boot time?

Unless you have deactivated kudzu entirely (IIRC, this is done via
chkconfig), one way would be removing individual entries
from /etc/sysconfig/hwconf

I tried that and it didn't work.  kudzu would just add the entries back and 
not do anything.

With a Tulip ethernet card kudzu would just add the hwconf entry and not load 
a device driver.  With a via-rhine card it would load the driver but not ask 
any question.

With all the other hardware the result is the same, even truncating the file 
to zero bytes does no good.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

It's no longer interactive in FC4 at all.

Not strictly true. I've had it prompt for (and completely ignore my 
input of) the root password when kudzu attempts to run 
system-config-display (which had no reason to be run, but I guess that's 
another story).

I hadn't filed a bug yet as I'd still been querying for similar 
kudzu-ish stuff. If you could give me some pointers as to what may be 
useful in a bugzilla reoprt for this, beyond the usual 'expected' and 
'actual' results, I guess now is a god time for me to ask and short-cut 
a few bugzilla entries.

Lovely. /etc/sysconfig/hwconf would be a start. You wouldn't
happen to be using the nVidia driver, would you?

No, the fglrx driver from livna. I'll do some testing in the next few 
days so I can accurately describe when this occurs, then file the report 
and follow up here with a bug #.

I had the exact same problem using just the OSS radeon driver.  I
swapped the video card from a cheap PCI radeon to a AGP radeon 9500.

Well, if you swap the video card, s-c-display will run. But it's
being run as root, so I don't see why it would ask for the root
password. Perhaps usermode/pam_console is confused.

Is there any other program that performs the interactive functions that kudzu 
used to perform?

Am I correct in assuming that it's still interactive in RHEL4 and that I 
should test it there?

Well, it will still call things like system-config-display, etc.
But it calls them all in an automated mode.
